CES EduPack 2017 – preparing students for industry

The new version of CES EduPack features resources and enhancements to engage students with the world of products, materials and processes, and help prepare them for work. New developments include:

  • New ‘Learn’ tool – this promotes self-study online. Interactive charts and improved materials and process records give students a boost when starting to explore.
  • Products, Materials and Processes – after extremely positive feedback, this new database to engage engineers and inspire designers will be made available to all users of CES EduPack 2017 (see Item 3 below).
  • Eco Design and Sustainable Development – new indicators enable students to understand risks associated with material choice, and consider restricted substances and material reuse. A new intermediate level database and case studies (see Free Download, above right) enable an easier introduction to this complex topic.
  • Preparing students for industry – new tools to compare the economics of different manufacturing processes, develop critical thinking skills, and access advanced case studies with industrially-relevant data.

2. International and interactive Symposia program

AMES 2016Over 70 participants at Singapore Symposium

The 2nd Asian Materials Education Symposium, December, was a great success. More than 70 participants from 10 countries enjoyed excellent speakers and stimulating discussions on materials and design, sustainable development, and the evolution in materials teaching. The event was held at NUS and the local host was John Wang (pictured). The growing Asian materials education community can look forward to the 3rd Asian Symposium at SUTD in December 2018.

Where else but Cambridge?

University of CambridgeWhere else would you find William Callister (Utah, USA), Ke Lu (IMR, China), Lorna Gibson (MIT, USA), and Mark Miodownik (UCL, UK) discussing and presenting on materials education? In a collegiate and open environment, the 9th International Materials Education Symposium, on April 6-7, will include an exciting ‘flipped classroom’ session, an increasingly popular format among educators.

Don’t wait – register today before the early bird deadline on January 31.

Products, Materials and Processes Database

3. Products, Materials and Processes Database launched

The Products, Materials and Processes Database has been created to introduce engineers to product design and inspire designers about materials. We received fantastic feedback on the pre-release version and as a result we will make an updated version available to all educators and students using CES EduPack 2017. Comments included: “The interface is so interactive and intuitive”; “It looks great and will be an excellent addition to CES EduPack”; and “Very interesting database, I look forward to its availability.”

4. Sign up for workshops and short courses

Courses and workshopsCES EduPack workshops and short courses get tremendous feedback – recent comments include: “Excellent mix of hands-on exercises and theory”, “Interesting presentation and exercises, good support from Granta staff”, and “I really see the use I can make of this with my students.”

We have a busy schedule of courses and workshops worldwide in the coming months, including:

  • UCI, Irvine, USA, on Feb 24
  • San Diego, USA (at TMS Annual Meeting), on Feb 26
  • Cambridge, UK, on Apr 4-5.

Check our website for details of upcoming courses, or contact us to arrange training at your university.

5. Watch Mike Ashby’s videos for educators

Training videos for educatorsTwo full-length CES EduPack training videos for educators, presented by Prof Mike Ashby, are now available online at the Teaching Resources website as Open Educational Resources (OER). The videos consist of Powerpoint slides with a voice-over.

Lecture Unit 1, The Materials of Engineering, deals with the classification and structure of material and process data in CES EduPack, and a description of associated resources. Lecture Unit 2, Material Property Charts, deals with the visualization of property data in CES EduPack as well as a description of how to create and manage bar charts and bubble charts.

Look out for exciting new developments on the next generation Education Resource site in the next few months!
