Preparing students for industry

Get the industry perspective from Honeywell Aerospace on ‘What Engineers need to know about Materials’

Honeywell AerospaceAfter last year’s success, we launch our webinar season this week with a guest speaker from Honeywell Aerospace who will explore the question: ‘What do Engineers need to know about Materials?’ Doug Hall, who over his 25-year career in the Aerospace industry has worked in teams of Materials Specialists and Mechanical Stress Analysts, will outline what knowledge and, importantly, skills and attitudes are needed in these interacting roles.

In the webinar, you will also discover how CES EduPack can support many of the learning outcomes necessary to produce engineers that will thrive in industry.

Students can prove their skillsCES Selector Training - Certified User

Making rational decisions based on good data is a widely applicable skill that CES EduPack supports. Students who use CES EduPack are sought out by industry – they can now prove their skills by completing the CES Selector Certificate Program, and they can also join the CES EduPack Alumni Group. Please tell your students about these two initiatives.

2. Inaugural Michael Ashby Outstanding Materials Educator AwardASEE award

The Materials Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) and Granta Design are sponsoring the Michael Ashby Outstanding Materials Educator Award. It recognizes distinguished and exceptional contributions in materials science and engineering education, and is intended to honour an individual with demonstrated notable leadership in materials education.

The Award is named in recognition of the achievements of renowned materials educator Prof Mike Ashby, the author of many leading textbooks in the field and an innovator in developing new approaches and resources to support materials teaching, such as the CES EduPack software. The nomination process has closed for this year and there are several strong candidates. The first annual award will be presented at the Summer 2017 ASEE annual meeting.

4. Open Development – we need your feedback

Products, Materials and Processes (PMP) databaseGranta works closely with senior academics from universities around the world – if you are interested in joining our development activities, we would welcome your feedback.

The Products, Materials and Processes Pre-release database aims to engage students of both Engineering and Design in learning about materials, through a product-centered, visually inspiring, interactive database that provides information on how and from what products are made. It is free until December 2016 for those that use CES EduPack 2016 in their teaching.

If you have downloaded the database to use with your students this semester, please don’t forget to give us feedback. We want to update the database by January 2017 based on your comments, so the sooner you can let us know the better.
