Materials education community comes together for the 8th North American Materials Education Symposium
Massachusetts Institute of Technology hosted this year’s North American Symposium. The strong, single track program encouraged the sharing of ideas, experiences, and strengthened links between members of the materials community.
The focus was discussion and collaboration.
Highlights included a thought-provoking opening talk by Norman Fortenberry, Executive Director of ASEE, on developing and recognizing faculty instructional skills.
Other topics provoking discussion were: how to reform curricula and support innovative teaching approaches; how stories of art, history and biomechanics can engage students with materials; and developments in online teaching. A round-table discussion on the requirements for producing MITx courses was also noteworthy. You can read all presentation abstracts here >

Granta has launched a new series of webinars and related resources to provide inspirational case studies to educators using CES EduPack
Every three months, there will be a webinar with Dr. Claes Fredriksson, who leads training and teaching resources at Granta. This will be followed up by providing a detailed fully worked out paper on the same topic and a link to the webinar recording.
Educators using CES EduPack can access the library of past case studies via the Granta Education Hub. Below, you can download at no cost an example case study, using the Mars Lander as its focus.

|
More than 1,000 universities and colleges worldwide use CES EduPack – yours may be among them. Contact us to see how your teaching can benefit too, like Dr Dick Groot from the University of Pretoria:
“…it enabled […] non-engineering, visually oriented students to get a ‘feel’ for material properties. Furthermore, they used the software to make materials and process choices suitable for their projects.”

EUROMAT 2017 and FEMS 30th Anniversary Education Tutorial
|
|
|
|
EUROMAT 2017, the European Congress and Exhibition on Advanced Materials and Processes, marked the 30th anniversary of the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS). Twenty-eight European materials societies and associations in various science and engineering fields make up FEMS, a not-for-profit association.
One revolutionary change across this period has been the emerging ‘digitalization’ of many aspects of materials engineering – from computer-based tools for education, through to systematic management of materials data and analysis in research and industry. As part of the celebrations, Granta hosted a half-day tutorial on visual and interactive materials teaching resources at EUROMAT.
