New web app gives easy access to users throughout the product development lifecycle

Cambridge, UK – September 14, 2016. Granta Design today announced the latest updates to the ASM Medical Materials™ database. This unique information source on the use of materials in medical devices now includes vastly expanded data on medical device recalls and new querying tools, helping manufacturers of healthcare products to make better-informed decisions. Available to all via online subscription, or as an integrated module in the GRANTA MI™ materials information management system, this upgraded and enhanced database provides even more help in areas including: materials selection, access to critical regulatory data, and understanding the clinical history of materials. Users reduce costs, time to market, and risk in certification, and increase innovation.

ASM Medical Materials is an information resource jointly developed with ASM International, the world’s largest association of materials scientists and materials-centric engineers. It combines engineering material properties and biomedical response data with medical device application information. Coverage of hundreds of materials, coatings, and drugs, from over 1,000 providers, linked to information on medical devices and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approvals, means that users can quickly find out where materials have been used in predicate devices. The new information on device recalls makes it easier to identify materials that may introduce risk. Also new in this release is support for Granta’s web app technology, enabling fast, interactive searching and filtering of the database. Companies can configure apps for specific user groups such as design engineers or regulatory and pre-clinical personnel.

Dr Michael N Helmus has chaired the advisory panel supporting development of the database, applying his senior-level industry experience acquired with organizations such as Advance Nanotech, Inc., Boston Scientific, Edwards Lifesciences, Baxter CVS, Pfizer, and Arthur D. Little. He said: “This is an era of rapid and competitive product development using emergent material technologies. The ASM Medical Materials database is a unique relational database focused to be used by device engineers, SAP purchasing, quality, preclinical and regulatory groups. The latest release allows professionals to not only rapidly identify materials used in predicate medical devices but to identify those that meet specified physical and biological/biocompatibility properties.”

The ASM Medical Materials database is available online here: http://mio.asminternational.org/mmd/

It is also available as a module within the GRANTA MI system, which companies use to capture and re-use proprietary materials knowledge. The result is a single source of vital material intelligence, from internal and external sources, enabling effective and efficient materials decisions. The database also complements Granta’s CES Selector™ software, which provides graphical tools to support materials selection and to identify possible replacement materials. Users identify candidate materials with CES Selector, then use the ASM Medical Materials database to research these options in depth.

Dr Sarah Egan, Product Manager for Data Product Solutions and Medical Devices at Granta Design, said: “The latest updates to the database make it useful for both engineering and materials departments and also, significantly, for regulatory scientists. Using the new web app interface to search the database means critical information can be accessed extremely quickly.”
