Introducing Engineering Students to Materials

 October 7, 2020 at 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm BST
Online Webinar

Engineers solve critical problems and design new products. To accomplish this effectively, they need a strong understanding of materials and how they are used. Materials science, however, is a theory-heavy discipline, which can make learning the fundamentals less engaging and more challenging for new students. But it does not have to be that way.

Materials Selection for Mechanical Design

 October 28, 2020 at 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm GMT
Online Webinar

Mechanical engineers create exciting products and solve complex problems. Choosing the right materials is crucial to their success. With over 200,000 engineering materials now available, there are a lot to choose from. Teaching undergraduate students how to select the best materials is a challenge. Mike Ashby’s textbook “Materials Selection in Mechanical Design” introduces a powerful methodology for systematic material selection. Now in its fifth edition, the textbook has been adopted worldwide. Teaching students to apply this methodology is much easier when you have comprehensive materials data and suitable software tools.

Material Selection to Avoid Mechanical Failure

 December 10, 2020 at 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm GMT
Online
Online Webinar

For products involving safety, mechanical failure is unacceptable and must be avoided at all cost. This is particularly true for applications in aerospace and other transport systems, or bioengineering, as well as for many types of high-performance sports equipment. Therefore, extensive testing is usually needed during product development to prevent failures, for example, fracture or fatigue from occurring in service.

Ansys Granta Selector contains reliable data for a wide range of materials used in product development across all industries. Using this data early in the product design stage eliminates the need for physical testing — saving time and money. In this webinar, we will explore how the materials selection tools “Find Similar” and “Engineering Solver” now available in Ansys Granta EduPack can prevent material failure. These tools can be seen as complementary to finite element simulations to promote safe shape design.

Pedagogy of Performance Indices

 February 9, 2021 at 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm GMT
Online
Online Webinar

Material selection is a key element in most product development and product designs. It involves screening the materials for design constraints followed by the ranking of remaining candidates. The question is, how can this ranking be done in a systematic and objective way?

This webinar examines the fundamental aspects of systematic material selection, using the methodology developed by Prof. Mike Ashby and his colleagues. We will highlight why performance indices are needed and how to derive these based on design requirements. Additionally, we will showcase the basic visual selection used in many undergraduate engineering programs and the advanced multi-objective approach used by professionals. Lastly, several examples from industrial case studies will be shared and demonstrated live.

  • Discover how EduPack is used to facilitate basic and advanced materials selection.
  • Learn why performance indices are needed and how to derive them.
  • Find out how performance indices are being used by exploring examples from engineering applications across several areas.

Properties and Selection of Superalloys

 March 10, 2021 at 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm GMT
Online
Online Webinar

Superalloys are a fascinating class of materials for high-performance applications in aerospace and automotive products and in offshore and chemical processing. These have excellent mechanical properties, such as strength and resistance to thermal creep, as well as resistance to corrosion and oxidation.

This webinar spotlights the material properties of Ni-based superalloys and how these materials perform in challenging conditions. Examples of material selection where Ni and Co based alloys are needed are showcased using the aerospace advanced database available in Ansys Granta EduPack. In one case, we will consider the effects of hypersonic velocities, which are experienced by the fuselage of the X-15 aircraft at Mach 6, to the thermo-mechanical performance of the materials.

  • Learn about the fascinating properties exhibited by superalloys in aerospace and automotive products and the information available in the aerospace database.
  • Discover how Granta EduPack can be used to compare and select materials for challenging thermo-mechanical applications.
  • Explore engaging examples and demonstrations for how to make the most of the software in education and design.

Introducing Students to Battery Pack Design with Ansys Granta EduPack

 March 31, 2021 at 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm BST
Online
Online Webinar

Battery selection and battery pack design are becoming increasingly important skills for engineers, as automotive and other sectors focus on electrification goals. There is an identified skills shortage of not only battery designers but also engineers who possess an understanding of batteries and battery pack design.

Ansys Granta EduPack’s new Battery Designer tool and associated battery cells data helps educators address these challenges. Students can compare different battery cells and explore their performance when combined into battery packs and modules, allowing them to gain understanding of the tradeoffs and challenges in this area.

By examining a simple, real-world case study of a battery pack for an electrical bicycle, we will demonstrate the capabilities of the Battery Designer tool and discuss how it can be used in education, from introducing students to the subject for the first time to enabling the design of battery modules for advanced projects.

  • Learn how students can use the battery cells table to compare battery types and investigate the performance of different cell chemistries.
  • Discover how the Battery Designer tool supports battery pack design in labs or for project work.
  • Understand the learning outcomes supported by the battery cells data and Battery Designer tool.

Materials Data for Simulation: A Bioengineering Use Case

 April 21, 2021 at 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm BST
Online
Online Webinar

This webinar spotlights how we use the materials selection methodology developed by Prof. Mike Ashby to identify the best material candidates for a joint hip replacement.

Learning how to choose materials to meet certain design constraints and objectives is critical. Understanding the behavior of these materials under different forces and pressures is fundamental to meeting the requirements of the product they are being designed for. For example, in healthcare, we often wonder how a product will perform in the body, however, we are limited by pre-clinical studies. This is where a simulation tool is cost effective, especially when it comes to teaching.

This webinar spotlights how we use the materials selection methodology developed by Prof. Mike Ashby to identify the best material candidates for a joint hip replacement. We will use a computer-aided design model of the hip implant to generate simulation results. Additionally, we will vary the materials choices using the simulation tool and understand the best material choices. Lastly, we will compare analytical to numerical results.

  • Discover how to use EduPack for advanced materials selection of a hip implant.
  • Learn how to use computer-aided design for teaching.
  • Explore how to use Discovery, a simulation-driven tool, to answer critical design questions.
