Properties and Selection of Superalloys

Superalloys are a fascinating class of materials for high-performance applications in aerospace and automotive products and in offshore and chemical processing. These have excellent mechanical properties, such as strength and resistance to thermal creep, as well as resistance to corrosion and oxidation.

This webinar spotlights the material properties of Ni-based superalloys and how these materials perform in challenging conditions. Examples of material selection where Ni and Co based alloys are needed are showcased using the aerospace advanced database available in Ansys Granta EduPack. In one case, we will consider the effects of hypersonic velocities, which are experienced by the fuselage of the X-15 aircraft at Mach 6, to the thermo-mechanical performance of the materials.

Introducing Students to Battery Pack Design with Ansys Granta EduPack

Battery selection and battery pack design are becoming increasingly important skills for engineers, as automotive and other sectors focus on electrification goals. There is an identified skills shortage of not only battery designers but also engineers who possess an understanding of batteries and battery pack design.

Ansys Granta EduPack’s new Battery Designer tool and associated battery cells data helps educators address these challenges. Students can compare different battery cells and explore their performance when combined into battery packs and modules, allowing them to gain understanding of the tradeoffs and challenges in this area.

By examining a simple, real-world case study of a battery pack for an electrical bicycle, we will demonstrate the capabilities of the Battery Designer tool and discuss how it can be used in education, from introducing students to the subject for the first time to enabling the design of battery modules for advanced projects.

Materials Data for Simulation: A Bioengineering Use Case

This webinar spotlights how we use the materials selection methodology developed by Prof. Mike Ashby to identify the best material candidates for a joint hip replacement.

Learning how to choose materials to meet certain design constraints and objectives is critical. Understanding the behavior of these materials under different forces and pressures is fundamental to meeting the requirements of the product they are being designed for. For example, in healthcare, we often wonder how a product will perform in the body, however, we are limited by pre-clinical studies. This is where a simulation tool is cost effective, especially when it comes to teaching.

This webinar spotlights how we use the materials selection methodology developed by Prof. Mike Ashby to identify the best material candidates for a joint hip replacement. We will use a computer-aided design model of the hip implant to generate simulation results. Additionally, we will vary the materials choices using the simulation tool and understand the best material choices. Lastly, we will compare analytical to numerical results.
