Materials Strategy Software ConsortiumMaterial Substitution Tools

Tools to identify—and understand the implications of—candidate substitutes for materials which are withdrawn, obsolete or unavailable.

There are a number of drivers for material substitution:

  • The current material may have become too expensive
  • It may no longer be manufactured or procurable
  • It may have undergone an unacceptable formulation change by the supplier
  • It may have an excessive carbon footprint or be regulated due to restricted substance content
  • Your organization may have deemed it to be a potential candidate for obsolescence in the future and seeks to substitute it now.

The Materials Strategy Software Consortium has an active project to develop tools to support the substitution process. We welcome participants from all industries; the project may be particularly relevant to representatives of Materials engineering, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) or Engineering Process Improvement departments.

The EMIT Consortium’s Restricted Substances Database. When combined with a Material Substitution Tool, the result will not only allow companies to identify areas of risk in their product line, but also provide a practical approach to identifying compliant alternatives.
