Reality #1 - Not every user is an expert
Now any authorized user can upload data to GRANTA MI, from anywhere, using a simple web browser interface...

...which takes advantage of new centralized template technology. This enables the person or team managing your GRANTA MI database to create 'importer templates' for any data format (e.g., a specific test machine) and to host them on your GRANTA MI server. As a user, you don't need to know about these templates. Just select the right format from a list and your data (from a spreadsheet or a text file) is added to the database.

It's also now easy to import your business rules into the MI:Optimize tool. You can quickly configure a 'wizard' user interface for engineers in your organization, leading them through key questions as they make materials decisions, providing guidance based on your corporate materials strategies.

...on metals, plastics, and composites (see below for updates made with Version 7). All of this data can be stored in the same GRANTA MI system, and now you can put this combined resource to even greater use with cross-database selection. Corporate data always has gaps—missing materials or those where particular properties are unknown. You can construct advanced queries ('show me all materials from a given producer, which cost below $2/lb, and are opaque') and GRANTA MI will search for answers across multiple databases, even where relevant properties have different names. Use reference data to 'fill in the gaps' in your in-house information.

Or as you refine this data over time—e.g., updating design data as new tests are completed. A key task is comparing data from different sources (for example, raw tests against handbook data) in order to validate and normalize it. Enhanced comparison charting in Version 7 helps, making it quick and easy to compare, for example, a test series against a design curve. Cross-database custom reports mean that you can configure your system to compare data from different sources in spreadsheets and tables. These practical tools save time as you build and manage your materials database.

They include materials engineers, design teams, analysts performing simulations, managers, and EH&S professionals. The GRANTA MI:Materials Gateway technology is revolutionizing access to materials data for many of these users, providing this access directly within standard CAD, CAE, and PLM software. Granta continually works with our customers to identify tools and usability enhancements that help end-users. In addition to usability enhancements in Version 2.0 of MI:Materials Gateway for CAD, CAE, and PLM users, a number of improvements have been made in Version 7 for users of the MI:Viewer web browser interface. These include improved graphing, chart overlays, and a series of performance enhancements, helping you to get the results that you need, faster. More on MI:Viewer

Developed in collaboration with Granta consortia and users, these templates provide data structures and associated tools that have been optimized for metals data, composites, medical applications, and restricted substances applications. They can be configured to your exact needs, helping you to short-cut the design process while benefiting from years of experience in implementing materials information technology. Data updates

In addition to the software updates and new features detailed above, extensive updates have been made to the reference data that is available for use within GRANTA MI.

Granta's MaterialUniverse data module, which provides broad coverage of engineering, economic, and environmental properties for over 3,000 types of engineering material, has been updated. Key enhancements include updated price data and new overview records summarizing the main characteristics, uses, strengths, and limitations of material classes. New processability attributes inform the selection of metals and polymers. There is new data on ductility and biopolymers. MaterialUniverse also acts as an 'index' to many of Granta's in-depth reference data sets. This use is facilitated by links between MaterialUniverse records and corresponding records for materials grades in those reference sets. These links have been updated.

New or updated reference data is available with Version 7 for the ESDU MMDH aero alloys data module, Prospector Plastics (previously known as 'IDES Plastics'), Firehole Composites, and StahlDat SX steels. Users can also benefit from updates to the full range of materials data modules available with GRANTA MI that have been made since Version 6—if you haven't already installed these updates, you can do this easily along with your Version 7 upgrade. *Further data updates will continue to be released throughout the year
