GRANTA MI:Viewer
Export to CAD and CAE

Do you, or your organization, need to use materials property data within Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems or Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) tools—for example, for Finite Element Analysis (FEA)?

You might just need density and cost data to perform simple product analysis in CAD, or you may require advanced materials models to support CAE simulations. With GRANTA MI, you can apply your managed corporate materials data and/or the best available materials reference data in these standard engineering software tools.

This means that your CAD calculations and CAE simulations are based on reliable, up-to-date, traceable, approved data, ensuring accuracy and consistency. Creating an effective link between materials information management and these engineering software tools also means that you make best use of your company's investment in materials data, whether purchased or generated from in-house testing and research.

MI:Viewer export tools

Through the MI:Viewer web browser interface it is very easy to export selected data in file formats that can be read by CAD and CAE systems. The video clip below shows how this is done.

The video content presented here requires JavaScript to be enabled and the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player. If you are using a browser with JavaScript disabled please enable it now. Otherwise, please update your version of the free Adobe Flash Player by downloading here.

The export is enabled by an underlying utility known as an exporter. It is easy to set up exporters for your choice of engineering software—for example, Granta customers have used our easy-to-configure exporter system to export their data to applications including:

  • Abaqus
  • ANSYS Classic & ANSYS Workbench
  • Autodesk Inventor
  • CATIA V5
  • LS-DYNA
  • MatML
  • Nastran
  • PAM-CRASH and PAM-STAMP
  • Patran
  • Pro/ENGINEER & Creo Elements/Pro
  • RADIOSS
  • SolidWorks

GRANTA MI also comes with a collection of standard exporters for our reference data series to provide out-of-the-box export to a number of appropriate material card formats for the software above. Granta creates and maintains these exporters through active partnerships with organizations including ANSYS, Dassault Systèmes, PTC, and Siemens PLM. Even if your code is not listed above, exporters can be created for any engineering software that provides a documented file format for its materials inputs.  Creating such exporters requires limited programming skills. They are routinely created by GRANTA MI customers, but can also be built for you by the Granta Services Team.

This means that you can enable GRANTA MI export support for any CAD or CAE system.

Interactive integration with CAD and CAE—MI:Materials Gateway

You can go a step further and enable full, interactive access to GRANTA MI data from directly within CAD, CAE, and other third-party applications through the MI:Materials Gateway technology.
