Real materials problems can require you to screen materials based on factors like specific strength, specific stiffness, or 'is this material warm to touch?'. These can't be found on any manufacturer's datasheet, but can be derived from easier-to-find properties. Now you don't need to spend time setting up those calculations: you will find these and similar properties listed on every MaterialUniverse datasheet, enabling instant charting and filtering.   CAMPUS and Prospector are a great resource for scanning tens of thousands of plastics options. But it can be hard to make effective comparisons when the same property, measured to different standards, is quoted under different property names. Now ASTM and ISO data is combined in one property, making comparison much easier. Enhanced 'agency ratings' help find plastics that meet medical or safety criteria.

Materials choices that cause joining problems result in low production speeds, high defect rates, and high costs. A new 'weldability' attribute has been added to all metal records in MaterialUniverse, making it simple to consider this important factor when pre-screening alloys.   It's now easier to find the right materials for medical applications. MaterialUniverse has been enhanced with data on the properties of bone and tissue, helping design of products that interact with the body. You can filter materials for those known to be used in medical applications. And updated 'agency rating' data aids screening against standards such as USP.

Simulation saves time and cost. But it can itself be costly. CES Selector helps. New JAHM Curve Data provides inputs for accurate simulation. Combine it with selection tools to identify materials for which good simulation data exists. There's new curve data in Prospector Plastics. And Altair Partner Alliance members can now use their HyperWorks units to access CES Selector and screen materials.   As well as providing great input data for simulation, the new JAHM Curve Data provides good coverage of the high temperature properties of materials. This data source offers temperature-dependent mechanical, thermal, physical and electrical properties, stress-strain curves, fatigue, creep, and magnetic properties for over 2,900 materials.

A popular feature is the ability to add in your own materials, so that you can quickly compare them to those already on the market. This process is now much faster. Just duplicate an existing database record and change any properties that are important or significantly different. This allows more complete analyses while saving the time required to type in all of the properties.   You can now perform faster and more effective 'what-if' analysis of the environmental impact of different design scenarios, using updated eco data. A new feature in the Eco Audit tool flags REACH restricted substance risks when a material is chosen and the tool now also considers re-use of parts, covering more realistic eco design options.
