Hot competition at MS&T

Granta once again joined the MS&T community this September. We were at the MS&T 07 conference at the COBO Center, Detroit. Granta participated in the conference exhibition, presented in the scientific program, and ran another of our successful open seminars on novel approaches and software to optimize materials strategy. And our "Guess the materials" contest generated heated competition on the exhibition floor!

Guess the materials contest!

A visit to our booth was timely for delegates in more than one way. They got the chance to win a watch by entering our "guess the material" contest!  All they had to do was apply their materials expertise (or educated guesswork) to the set of materials samples in our booth. Every entrant received one of our "GRANTA MI, the game" materials property card games. The winner receives a prize of a watch.

The correct answers were:

A. Teflon (or PTFE, or polytetrafluoroethylene)

B. Titanium

C. Galvanized steel

D.Jet (or petrified wood)

E. Zirconia foam

Congratulations to our contest winner, Carlos Alonzo of Rohm & Haas.

Exhibition - time to catch up with Granta?

Industrial visitors to the booth viewed the latest GRANTA MI and CES Selector software solutions and find out how Granta is now:

  • Offering more materials reference data than ever (recent additions include MMPDS-02 aerospace data, the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel data, information on thermoplastic elastomers, and upgraded pricing and eco-data).
  • Supporting enterprise roll-out of its mature materials data management solution at leading manufacturing organizations. Granta supports the Material Data Management Consortium - a group of leading aerospace, defense, and energy enterprises. Boeing and Northrop Grumman are the newest members.
  • Helping enterprises to optimize their materials strategy (see seminar details below).

Academic visitors discussed the new version of our CES EduPack software for teaching materials and processes. New software features, books, and supporting lectures extend support for your teaching, particularly for first and second year materials courses.

Scientific program

Granta participated in the symposium: "Developments in Web-Based Materials Property Databases, Knowledge Management of Materials Information, and Materials Informatics for Accelerated Materials Discovery".

Granta speakers were:

Wed 19 Sep, 9:40am Dr Will Marsden

Best Practice For Materials Information Management

Wed 19 Sep, 3.10pm Dr Arthur Fairfull

Supporting Materials Strategy - Realizing the Value from a Materials Property Database

After the close of the symposium on Sep 20, why not join Granta for lunch and our open seminar on materials strategy software?

Granta open seminar on materials strategy

The seminar was for any manager or materials expert who needs to develop strategies to deal with issues such as:

  • Avoiding or reducing materials costs

  • Responding to environmental regulations

  • Specifying or substituting materials to meet the needs of global manufacturing
