'Evolution of materials' murals draw interest at opening of Cambridge University’s new Materials Science building
Cambridge, UK – November, 2013 Granta were delighted to attend the grand opening of Cambridge University’s new Materials Science building last month. This world-leading center for the study of and research into materials science and metallurgy has just moved into a new £48 million home on the University of Cambridge West Cambridge site.
While exploring the new facilities, many of those present were drawn to the murals depicting the evolution of materials through human history. These were provided by Granta and based on charts generated using Granta’s CES EduPack™ software. These material property charts (commonly known as Ashby charts after Granta founder, Professor Mike Ashby), provide a highly visual depiction of—in this case—how innovation has led to not just more materials, but materials which cover an increasing range of crucial engineering properties. Visitors to the Department can have fun locating their own areas of material expertise on the charts.
Granta has always had close relations with the University of Cambridge, since the company’s foundation in 1994 by Professors Mike Ashby and David Cebon as a spin-out from the University. Granta remains an independent, private company owned by its founders, employees, ASM International, and the University of Cambridge.
Through the ongoing work of Professor Mike Ashby and the Granta Education Team, the company supports materials education, providing a unique set of teaching resources that are used at over 800 universities and colleges around the world to train the next generation of engineers, materials scientists, and product designers. With the launch this month of the new-look Teaching Resource Website, Granta looks to support materials educators as they seek to inspire students, providing access to over 250 resources together with online opportunities to exchange ideas with the world-wide Materials Education Community.
Educators using CES EduPack can download the evolution of materials poster from Granta's teaching resource website.
During November, this poster will also be made available to anyone accessing the Teaching Resource Website through the Open Educational Resource (OER) scheme.
