Abstract

In the selection of plastics and elastomers for use in medical devices and supplies, engineers need to make decisions based on rational methods and high quality data. These decisions must be reliable, repeatable, and open to audit. This presentation will discuss, and present a solution to, the following challenges:

• Why is it not easy to select polymers in a systematic manner?
  
  
• Where can we get data from?
  
  
  • what are the limitations of typical data sources?
  • how can the limitations be overcome?
    
    
• How do we account for materials attributes, like biocompatibility and sterilizability, that are important for medical applications?
  
  
• How can we trade-off cost, mass, size and performance in design? How do we provide accurate data for CAE?
