Granta Design are the materials information technology experts. We provide aerospace, defense, and energy enterprises with systems to manage in-house materials data, valuable reference information on materials and the regulations that impact their use, and tools to support materials decisions. Our Coatings Data Module supports strategic decisions on the complex compliance, regulatory, and risk factors surrounding coatings.
Granta's Will Martin will be speaking on 'Using Surface Treatment Specification Databases to Anticipate and Accelerate Response to Regulatory Changes' (abstract below) at 16:20 on Tuesday August 28.
We will also have a booth—come and find us to discuss your materials information challenges.
Granta is the leading provider of materials information technology to this sector. Our development is driven in close collaboration with the Material Data Management Consortium (MDMC) and Environmental Materials Information Technology (EMIT) Consortium, which include leading aerospace organizations such as Boeing, NASA, Rolls-Royce, GE—Aviation, Honeywell, and Raytheon, as well as the
- Manage in-house materials data—save time and support innovation in materials engineering and design
- Access valuable reference data on materials, coatings, and the regulations that impact them
- Analyze your parts and processes to identify restricted substance risk
- Enable informed selection and substitution of materials and coatings

Abstract:
Using Surface Treatment Specifications to Anticipate and Accelerate Response to Regulatory Changes
The last ten years has seen a step change in regulatory activity that impacts on the availability of substances used in coatings. Initially driven by the European Union in the form of Directives such as the End of life Vehicles (ELV) Directive and Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directives, such product and industry focused regulation is now a worldwide phenomena and impacts across all industry sectors. Understanding this rapidly evolving regulatory framework and the risks it presents to engineering organisations is becoming increasingly important for ensuring continuity of supply.
This paper presents an overview of the work being undertaken by Granta to enable engineering enterprises to assess and mitigate for the risks presented by regulations such as REACH. The impact on Surface Treatment Specifications (STS) in particular is focused on where a database and software system is presented that supports the identification of STS at risk of impending regulatory activity, and supports the substitution effort to find and qualify lower risk alternatives. The coatings database supporting this system has been developed in close collaboration with Rowan Technology Group, and the overall system is a product of Granta’s involvement in the Environmental Information Technology (EMIT) Consortium. The EMIT Consortium is formed of aerospace, DOD, and industrial engineering enterprises based in the US and EU.
