Granta makes first deliverables to Aerospace Consortium

A gathering at the secluded Golden Lion Meeting Center outside Youngstown PA marked the second meeting of the Materials Data Management Consortium (MDMC), hosted by Westmoreland Mechanical Testing and Research. The twenty-five delegates represented twelve organisations from across the US aerospace sector including materials producers, test houses, government research labs, and commercial OEMs. Dr. Steven M. Arnold of NASA Glenn Research Center chaired the meeting.

The first task of the meeting was to review the software systems delivered to each member over the previous six months as a part of their membership. These included the standard commercial software solution, augmented by new lab test data reduction modules and a web enabled system for distributing data to a wide, controlled user community.

The second task was to prioritise the developments of the software system to be undertaken over the next six months. Previous meetings had outlined an ideal materials information management software system. This ideal solution was updated and the software developments required to attain it identified and prioritized.

Jeff Sickmeier of Rolls Royce Corporation, Indianapolis, hightlighted the significance of the consortium's work. "I can say with complete confidence that the Fatigue Crack Growth module will result in at least an 80% reduction in the time it takes me to do the analysis and roll up the data into a useful model. Such an enormous efficiency gain is more important to our site and our industry in these times of reduced resources than it has ever been. Well done!"

ASM International is the MDMC's secretariat and Granta Design is its lead software developer.
