New Approaches in Materials Education in Japan
As part of the week long MITS 2005 meeting held
by the Japanese National Institute for Materials Science
(NIMS), a training course in the use of the CES EduPack 2005
system for university education was presented to more than
30 delegates by Dr David Cebon of Cambridge University Engineering
Department. The course was followed by a symposium on Application
of Materials Databases for Education.
The course introduced the teaching methodology New Approaches
to Materials Education, developed by Ashby and Cebon,
described the recently relesed CES EduPack 2005 system
and enabled participants to try out the software, installed
on their own laptops. |

Dr Koichi Yagi, Director General of the Materials Information
Technology Station (MITS), said: “We were very pleased to
host this course on use of the CES EduPack as part of our MITS
2005 event. The participants found the course to be very interesting
and it stimulated their thoughts about teaching methods for materials.
The CES EduPack software is very easy to use and contains some
excellent introductory information about a wide range of materials
and processes. This event built on the successful relationship
between NIMS and Granta Design, which has included connecting
the NIMS databases to Granta’s web portal Matdata.net.”
