The Material Data Management Consortium (MDMC)

Managing critical data in aerospace, defense, and energy

MDMC logoThe Material Data Management Consortium (MDMC) is a unique collaborative project focused on developing and applying software to manage mission-critical materials data in the aerospace, defense, and energy sectors.

The MDMC was founded in 2002 by materials-oriented corporations and government agencies. Its objective is to identify best practice materials data management and to create and implement the software tools to support this approach.

The accurate and efficient use of materials data is critical to many engineering enterprises. This is particularly true in aerospace, defense, and energy, where engineers need to make the best use of materials such as alloys, composites, and ceramics, often under extreme conditions. In these highly-regulated and quality-conscious industries, it is also vital that data is secure and controlled, to ensure that it is up-to-date and accessible only to approved users, and that data is fully traceable, so that any design decision can be quickly and reliably reviewed.

The MDMC has helped to develop a materials data management solution that meets stringent requirements for accuracy, efficiency, security, control, and traceability.

The following papers provide more in-depth information on the technology developed by the MDMC, and its applications.

Technical Paper: Meeting the Materials Data Management Needs of Engineering Enterprises

The paper takes a technical perspective of the materials data challenge, examining the practical requirements of those, such as materials engineers, who generate and supply materials data and those, such as stress analysts and design engineers, who are data 'consumers'. The paper analyzes four specific use-case examples: Materials support for engineering design Statistical process control Selecting and substituting materials Meeting regulatory requirements (e.g., REACH)

New White Paper: The Business Case for Materials Information Management

The impact of materials information on productivity, innovation, cost, and risk in the engineering enterprise

If your organization makes or designs products, it uses materials. Information about these materials is critical, often with multi-million dollar impact. Yet many organizations have no systematic, enterprise approach to this information, despite resulting risks, costs, and missed opportunities. This paper examines why these problems occur, the business case for solving them (across areas including materials and process teams, design, purchasing, regulatory compliance, and technical marketing), and how leading manufacturers are now meeting this challenge.
