Project Manager—Collaborative R&D

£28-33k (depending on experience) + health/gym + pension + share options.

Background:

Granta participates in a growing number of collaborative R&D projects that are partially funded by the EU 7th Framework programme and also by the UK’s Technology Strategy Board (TSB). These projects are in diverse areas of materials science and engineering, but include design for the environment, nanotechnology, and composite modeling.

As part of their contribution to these projects, Granta is required to deliver material science and engineering related software, databases, and services. The volume of projects already in progress and the ongoing potential for further collaborative R&D is now so great that we are looking to recruit a suitably qualified scientist or engineer to fulfil the role of Project Manager—Collaborative R&D.

The Role:

  • Manage existing collaborative R&D projects—coordinate deliverables and reporting in line with the project mandate whilst keeping the commercial and business objectives of the company and the project partners clearly in mind.
  • Manage project delivery with the assistance of project Technical Leads, liaising with internal teams to manage time and resources efficiently.
  • With the assistance of the Technical Lead and other stakeholders, translate project requirements into internal product specifications for approval and delivery.
  • Coordinate collaborative R&D development requirements for projects within the context of the internal product delivery strategy, liaising with the software, content, and services groups to ensure maximum complementarity of the project deliverables.
  • Fulfil some of the project deliverables personally.
  • Prepare project forecasts, manage project spend, and report internally and externally providing direct input to project audits.
  • Assist in the preparation of collaborative R&D proposals.
  • Depending on project research area, the candidate may be required to represent Granta’s interests on industry working groups and committees including those aimed at standardisation.
  • Depending upon the candidate’s technical experience and interests, it is also possible to be the Granta champion/leading advocate for a specified technical area of Granta’s work.

You must have:

  • Qualified as a materials scientist, mechanical engineer, or similar, or have significant commercial experience in a similar field.
  • A broad understanding of materials and engineering technologies.
  • A track record of successfully managing the technical and financial delivery of projects.
  • The ability to manage a diverse workload often covering different technical subject areas.
  • A degree of commercial acumen.

Having the following would be an advantage:

  • Qualification in a relevant technical field to PhD or equivalent R&D experience.
  • Experience in managing successful TSB and/or EU Framework projects either as a participant or as coordinator—experience in writing successful proposals for the same would be considered beneficial.
  • The possession of qualifications and experience in either or both of Agile or Prince2.
  • The possession of a second European language.
