White
paper studies return on investment
Why is materials information critical to engineering enterprises?
What is driving the emerging interest in materials information
technology? How much money can this technology save or make for
my organization? What are the essential issues to consider in its
implementation?
These questions are answered by a new white paper, The
Materials Information Challenge in Engineering Enterprises,
that draws on Granta's experience of working with the MDMC, a
consortium of a dozen top engineering organizations including
NASA, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, and Alcan. The paper identifies
the key challenges faced by such enterprises in their management
and use of materials information, and estimates the return on
investment from materials information technology. This
return can be substantial, potentially exceeding $10 for every
$1 invested.

New aerospace,
defense, and energy solutions
The new version of GRANTA MI offers novel solutions
to key problems for high-performance engineering organizations
such as aerospace, defense, and energy enterprises. Such organizations
need the right materials property data and place a high value on
the ability to trace data back through the design process to its
source.
GRANTA MI 1.2 updates access to the MMPDS materials
reference data (see next item) and also provides new data-linking
features that let you connect any item of test or reference data
in the database to any other related data
or documents. GRANTA MI also offers more flexibility in managing all of
your materials information, since the system now handles any document
format. You can store pictures, PDF files, Word documents, even
movies, along with numbers and plain text.
The result is that you can now connect data to complete pedigree
information — for example, linking property data directly
to the document from which it was sourced or to the test results
from which it was derived. More...

Major step forward for MMPDS
usage
GRANTA MI 1.2 represents a major step forward for materials experts
and engineers who want to use MMPDS (formerly MIL-HDBK-5), the
authoritative source of property data for aerospace alloys. The
MMPDS data module available with GRANTA MI allows you to search,
browse, and use this information. The latest version of the data,
MMPDS-02, is now available within this module. New GRANTA MI features
also make it possible to link property information derived from
MMPDS directly to PDF copies of the relevant pages in the MMPDS
source documents, allowing users to inspect the full context for
data. GRANTA MI offers a powerful means to access and use MMPDS
data, while also providing an extremely cost-effective method to
deploy this data easily to users across your enterprise. More...

Materials science
labs: never lose a test result!
Would you like to capture and keep all of your
key materials data in one place? Would you like to have
that data fully indexed, searchable, and easy to analyze? Until
now, materials database solutions have only offered this power
and flexibility for numerical and plain text data. You've had to
store other information, such as photomicrographs or PDF copies
of materials datasheets, in separate systems or in unwieldy hard
copy. GRANTA MI 1.2 removes this inconvenience. Now you can store
and link data in any format, allowing you to integrate structured
property data with unstructured text, images, supporting documentation,
and spreadsheets. More...

Avoiding environmental
stress cracking failures
Environmental stress cracking (ESC), cracking due to the combined
action of stress and fluid environment, is a critical issue when
designing with plastics, and a major source of in-service product
failure. A recent study showed that 25% of plastic part failures
are related to ESC. It has always been hard to design
against ESC due to the lack, and complexity, of data covering the
performance of different materials in different chemical environments,
and under different stress conditions.
GRANTA MI 1.2 provides simple
guidance on ESC performance of plastics and integrates it with
analysis tools that make it easy to study and compare materials
and to flag up ESC problems during design. The release also offers
enhanced data on the permeability and biodegradability of plastics – information
that will be useful in areas including eco-design, packaging, and
medical devices. More...

NASA materials
information team scoops award
The MAPTIS II development team was
recently awarded a 'One NASA' award for their work in providing
NASA, NASA contractors, and NASA-associated organizations with
a single-point source and access to materials information. The
team of engineers from the materials and process laboratory at
NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, led by Michael Mitchell, applied
Granta technology in creating a web-based application that revises
and expands the original MAPTIS database. MAPTIS consisted primarily
of space environmental data generated by NASA test organizations,
along with documentation on materials certification for space applications.
MAPTIS-II adds mechanical, physical, thermal, thermophysical, and
thermal protection system materials properties.
