New - Materials for Medical Devices Database
ASM International and Granta Design have unveiled the first and only materials database created specifically to support medical device design. The Materials for Medical Devices Database: Cardiovascular Module for the first time gives researchers and designers a comprehensive and authoritative source of mechanical, physical, biological response and drug compatibility properties for the materials and coatings used in cardiovascular device applications. The module is the result of thousands of hours of data acquisition, peer-review, and verification by specialists. It includes a comprehensive presentation of interrelated information, all fully traceable to primary sources.

MDMC Meeting - moving to enterprise-wide implementations
The Material Data Management Consortium (MDMC) membership met at the Honeywell Aerospace site in Tempe, AZ, USA, this month to review progress and drive forward the implementation of enterprise-wide materials information management in member organizations.
In addition to Honeywell, organizations represented were Rolls-Royce, GE - Aviation, NASA, AWE, Los Alamos National Laboratories, Concurrent Technologies Corporation, the US Navy, ASM International, and Granta. A key theme of the meeting was members moving beyond pilot and initial implementation phases and into multi-site, multinational enterprise-wide programs, rolling out use of the GRANTA MI software to hundreds of users. The meeting discussed the practical software, system, hardware, and communication issues involved in such implementations, and shared experience that has led to success. Members reviewed new software developments that were specified at earlier project meetings and are now undergoing final testing before delivery.

Materials Strategy - environment & cost top Orlando agenda
Join us for an open seminar of our Materials Strategy Forum in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday, February 28th. The event will cover issues such as optimizing materials usage against cost and environmental objectives. Our keynote speaker will be world-renowned authority on materials selection in design, Professor Mike Ashby of the University of Cambridge. The seminar will be held alongside the TMS Annual Meeting.
The Materials Strategy Forum is driving the development of new software tools that address today's critical issues in materials specification and use. One such issue is the need to respond to the global wave of environmental legislation such as Europe's Energy using Product (EuP) initiative and REACH regulations. Other issues include coping with volatile raw materials prices and rationalizing materials or suppliers. Mike Ashby's keynote presentation will examine cost modeling for materials and processes and other forefront materials strategy research. The seminar will also include comprehensive demonstrations of the latest software and roundtable review and discussion of materials strategy priorities in industry.
This seminar follows the successful inaugural meeting of the Forum in Cincinnati last October, which attracted representatives from eighteen leading manufacturing organizations. That meeting saw a lively discussion on how materials information technology could help to meet the diverse materials strategy needs of these companies, and provided valuable guidance to the development of the Forum as a collaborative project. The first members have now subscribed to this collaboration, and a members' workshop will be held immediately following the Orlando seminar.

MRS Bulletin - Materials Informatics edition
The MRS Bulletin's December 2006 edition focused on Materials Informatics, with a wide range of articles on topics relating to the management, analysis, synthesis, and application of materials information. Granta Managing Director Dr David Cebon was a guest editor and contributed a paper on 'Engineering Materials Informatics'. Other papers included a submission from Dr Steven Arnold of NASA, chair of the MDMC Steering Committee, on the 'Paradigm Shift in Data Content and Informatics Infrastructure Required for Generalized Constitutive Modeling of Materials Behavior'.

ASM and Granta sign five-year strategic agreement
Granta Design and ASM International (The Materials Information Society) have announced a new five-year strategic collaboration to advance materials information resources that are critical to the engineering process. The new agreement renews, extends, and deepens the existing successful partnership and includes a commitment to co-develop new products serving specific engineering sectors.
ASM International provides a vast library of professional reference content, enormous experience in developing and using such content, and the backing of a membership of 38,000 materials scientists and engineers. The partnership began in 2000. Stanley C. Theobald, ASM’s Managing Director, says: "Over the past six
years Granta has established itself as the global leader in materials information management, based on its innovation, on-time delivery, and listening carefully to the needs of its customers. We look forward to continuing our work together to enhance the value of ASM information resources and to develop new products that serve the materials engineering community."

Download our white paper!
Hundreds of you have already downloaded our white paper 'The Materials Information Challenge in Engineering Enterprises.' This paper draws on Granta's experience of working with members of the MDMC (see the MDMC news item above) and other engineering enterprises. We identify the key challenges faced by such organizations in managing and using materials information, and compute the return on investment from emerging materials information technology. This can be substantial, potentially exceeding $10 for every $1 invested. Thank you for your interest and the comments that you have sent. If you haven't yet read the paper, why not download it now?
