EADS Astrium joins collaboration on eco design and REACH
EADS Astrium is the latest new member of the Environmental Materials Information Technology, EMIT Consortium. The project, which began work on July 1, 2008, is developing information resources and software that aid members’ response to regulations such as REACH and enable design for minimum environmental impact, including low carbon footprint, energy efficiency, and reduced wastes and emissions. EADS Astrium joins founder members Emerson, Eurocopter, NASA, Rolls-Royce, and the UK's National Physical Laboratory, NPL.

Seminar: Eco design and regulations, Derby, UK, Apr 22
The next meeting of the EMIT Consortium (see item above) will be at Rolls-Royce in Derby, UK this April. The meeting will include a one-day seminar open to any engineering organization with an interest in eco design or in responding to environmental legislation. You can join the Consortium members to see the latest eco design software, hear case study presentations, and discuss your particular interests. You may also be interested in Granta's upcoming web seminar on this topic.

CAD/PLM integration is key for materials strategy software
The 5th meeting of the Materials Strategy Consortium took place in Chicago during December. Even the freezing winter weather did not deter a hard core of attendees! The Consortium focuses on software for strategic objectives including optimization of materials decisions during design and rationalization of materials and suppliers across multi-business enterprises. These objectives require integration between materials information systems and wider engineering and PLM systems. Such integration was one key focus of the meeting, including demonstrations of a prototype materials strategy tool operating within the Pro/ENGINEER software, which enables the user to generate a report on the preferred status of every material in an assembly.
Other highlights were presentations by Consortium members Dr Bob Rivett from Emerson Electric and Dr Tim O’Brien from Moen. It was interesting to compare the goals of these organizations. Emerson aims to drive materials rationalization strategies, enabling designers to specify preferred materials from preferred suppliers. For Moen, the rapidly changing business environment is the key challenge – raw materials and energy costs are volatile, while changing consumer attitudes and associated legislative responses are imposing new constraints regarding the toxicity and potential environmental impact of materials.

Seminars: 'Managing and Using Materials Information'
Join Granta for one-day seminars at the following venues. Events are free and open to engineers, materials specialists, and managers with an interest in materials information and its use in engineering design and in business decisions. Each seminar will include a speaker from a leading engineering organization (check individual agendas for details) as well as software demonstrations and round-table discussions. These events are a great opportunity to network, see the latest technology, and get your questions answered.

Granta chairs session at E2S2 sustainability conference, Denver, CO (May 4-7)
Granta will participate in the Environment, Energy & Sustainability Symposium (E2S2) (formerly JSEM) in Denver, CO in May. The conference will address challenges facing government agencies and expects participation from all US defense services and agencies, as well as other US and international government agencies. Granta will host a session within the main meeting agenda. The session will review requirements for eco design and for managing issues relating to restricted substances.

Consortium sees advances for data management, analysis, and composites
The thirteenth meeting of the Material Data Management Consortium was held at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL last month. Members from over a dozen leading aerospace, defense, and energy enterprises again gathered to review progress in developing the GRANTA MI materials information management system, to discuss their implementations, and to provide guidance to Granta for future developments of the system. Among the developments reviewed were:
- A new comprehensive search capability combining numerical criteria and free format text
- A new database schema to support composite data management
- New analysis capabilities for materials models
These will be available to all GRANTA MI users in version 3.0 of the software, due for release later this year.
Another theme was the value of effective materials data management across functions within member organizations. A number of interesting examples described how creating a high quality, controlled source of corporate materials data using GRANTA MI had resulted in unexpected applications beyond the materials and engineering groups—for example, in informing purchasing.
The next meeting will be held at Boeing, Seattle, in August.
Materials for medical applications
Materials are of central importance to new product development in the medical device industry. Designers must make best use of corporate knowledge about these materials, and they need access to the right data and tools to inform decisions on selection, substitution, qualification, regulation, and bio-compatibility, and for design calculations.
Granta will be demonstrating and talking about the latest innovations in software for medical materials at a series of upcoming events. There is a Granta web seminar (details above) in late February. Granta will attend the MD&M West conference in Anaheim, CA. Visit us on the ASM International booth.
Granta is also speaking on this topics at upcoming conferences:
- MEDTEC Europe, Stuttgart, Germany, Mar 3-5
- MEDTEC UK, Birmingham, UK, Mar 25-26
- Plastics for Medical Devices, Brussels, Belgium, April 21-22
