1. New CES Selector 2015:

Solving real-life engineering problems

The new CES Selector™ 2015 will be available next month, focused on helping engineers, materials experts, and product development teams to find and apply materials property data to solve real-life engineering problems.

It offers: new tools enabling you to rapidly specify a particular engineering requirement during materials selection; enhanced export of material property information for use in FEA; new and extended data supporting metals equivalency studies; and improved coverage of plastics, medical materials, and composites. For those concerned about environmental and supply risk, additional resources include enhanced traceability of environmental data and new data on critical materials and related risk factors.

2. Automotive focus: PSA Peugeot Citroën host First AutoMatIC meeting; upcoming webinars

Consortium members also include General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, and KSPG

Next month sees the first meeting of the Automotive Material Intelligence Consortium (‘AutoMatIC’), hosted by PSA Peugeot Citroën in Paris (October 23). The Consortium, whose initial members have now been confirmed as General Motors, Jaguar Land Rover, KSPG AG, and PSA, will bring together OEMs and suppliers in the automotive and off-highway vehicle sectors to develop best practice for materials information and its use. It will help members as they aim to increase engineering productivity, lower costs, improve product performance, lower risk associated with materials supply and regulations on restricted substances, and make the most of investments in simulation and PLM. Further expressions of interest from OEMs or suppliers in the Automotive and Off-Highway Vehicle sectors are welcome.   New Automotive Material Intelligence Consortium (‘AutoMatIC’)

Webinar: Strategic materials information initiatives in the automotive industry

On September 30, Granta’s Dan Williams will be discussing why automotive companies consider materials information to be of strategic value. 3. MDMC Phase IV: maximizing impact on material and product R&D

Phase IV launch meeting hosted by Pratt & Whitney;
GKN Aerospace is latest member
  The MDMC move into Phase IV

The 24th Material Data Management Consortium (MDMC) meeting, hosted by United Technologies Corp. subsidiary, Pratt & Whitney, in East Hartford, CT last month, saw the Consortium move into Phase IV. The most recent phase (2009-2013) of the MDMC created new tools to deploy materials data for use in design and simulation, and new capabilities to manage information relating to composites and advanced materials. The new Phase IV will focus on further improvements in the efficiency of materials data management and on helping members to apply this data for greater impact on their wider engineering activities. Priorities include:

  • Continued optimization of usability for members’ workflows.
  • Further improvements to best practice approaches and technology for composites.
  • Extending support of areas such as corrosion, tribology, wear, joining, and additive manufacturing.
  • Creating and deploying data for virtual product development; members report increasing interest in this topic due to the volume of materials data now generated and consumed by FEA/CAD.
  • Support for integrated computational materials engineering (ICME).

4. Responding to environmental, regulatory, and supply chain risks

Granta and Boeing in Eureka report on regulation and compliance

In the latest edition of Eureka magazine, Editor, Justin Cunningham asks why the management of materials data has become vital for engineering businesses. He reports how Boeing are capturing and recording materials data, helping them accelerate their reaction to regulatory restriction on materials and substances: "The amount of time we have to be compliant is getting shorter, while the number of new regulations coming through is only going to increase. So this is a real business risk that could really have an impact if we are not able to act quickly enough."     Eureka magazine: why is the management of materials data vital for engineering businesses?

This risk, Cunningham explains, has seen Granta play an increasing role in helping large OEMs manage material data in relation to environmental regulatory pressure. The article concludes that good materials information management is key: "once the materials information and data is in place, it allows companies to react much more quickly to new regulation so to understand the risk earlier, so engineers can find alternatives or workarounds."

New Product Intelligence software offers ‘BoM Analyzer’        

The growing need for engineering enterprises to optimize products while minimizing environmental, regulatory, and supply chain risks has led to the development of the GRANTA MI:Product Intelligence Package.   EMIT: developing software tools and information resources that embed eco design and consideration of environmental regulations into everyday engineering workflows

At this week’s Trilateral Conference on Critical Materials (Ames, IA), Granta is presenting a poster discussing how materials information technology can be applied to meet the challenges of Critical Materials, particularly for product development and design organizations. These challenges are significant, as disruptions to supply or price volatility can have major impacts on product price and production. This topic has also been a recent focus of the Environmental Materials Information Technology (EMIT) Consortium, a collaborative project that develops and applies information technology solutions to enable product design and development in the context of environmental objectives and regulations. The EMIT Consortium will be meeting at Honeywell (in Phoenix, AZ) next week.

5. Aerospace focus: webinar reports and upcoming events

Webinar reports from Honeywell Aerospace, Lockheed Martin, and NASA

At a recent aerospace-focused webinar hosted by NASA Tech Briefs, three leading aerospace and defense organizations shared their experiences of managing and using critical data on composites, alloys, and other materials. Honeywell drew on 15 years' use of CES Selector to describe the benefits that come from applying a rational material selection process that is exhaustive, auditable, and repeatable.

Lockheed Martin explained how the use of GRANTA MI:Materials Gateway can deliver significant benefits, including consistent material usage, improved documentation, traceability, and considerable time savings. NASA discussed the need for a robust informatics infrastructure for ICME, drawing on the work of the Material Data Management Consortium (see also Item 3), concluding that “the GRANTA MI information management system is capable of handling the demands of integrating both virtual and experimental data.”  
Lockheed Martin explained how the use of GRANTA MI:Materials Gateway can deliver significant benefits, including consistent material usage, improved documentation, traceability, and considerable time savings.

Upcoming aerospace webinars (Starting September 30)

At four short webinars this Fall, we’ll address how to maximize the value of information on the properties and behavior of the materials—alloys, composites, ceramics, plastics—critical to aerospace and defense enterprises.

6. New and enhanced metals and plastics data

Those using data on metals can now access the latest MI-21 data, covering specifications (from standards, trade literature, and datasheets) and data on joining and surface treatment consumables. This increases coverage to 63,000 materials and consumables. Enhancements include a new, easier way to search and report on the available forms of specifications. We have also updated the StahlDat SX Data Module to ensure it contains the complete and up-to-date Register of European Steels, with specification data and temperature-dependent material properties.

For the first time in CES Selector, the StahlDat Sheet Steels for Automotive Data Module (pictured) is available, providing data that helps preparation of simulation models for crash, stamping, and forming. CES Selector 2015 users join GRANTA MI users in being able to access MMPDS-08, the preeminent source of materials property data for aerospace component design.   The StahlDat Sheet Steels for Automotive Data Module (pictured) has been made available this Fall, providing data that helps preparation of simulation models for crash, stamping, and forming

The latest plastics data updates, available for both CES Selector and GRANTA MI users, include CAMPUS and M-Base Plastics and Prospector Plastics (formerly known as IDES plastics). CAMPUS and M-Base Plastics contains the latest data from leading resin suppliers, including 4621 new grades and 108 new examples of polymer applications, 235 new biopolymers. There are I93 new grades in the CAMPUS Plastics dataset (which now includes Edistir and Sinkral grades from Versalis S.p.A). Prospector Plastics offers the latest data from global resin suppliers, including 8148 new grades. This comprehensive resource contains around 90,000 datasheets from over 800 suppliers; around 70,000 datasheets list ASTM standard properties and around 40,000 datasheets list ISO properties.

7. Medical focus: Managing materials information for smarter device design and analysis

Medical device organizations need to make the right material selections to optimize products and avoid problems in design, manufacturing, or use. Material replacement is increasingly important, especially in the light of new restricted substance legislation. How can medical device manufacturers avoid delays and problems due to non-compliance or material obsolescence? What steps can reduce costs while maintaining performance?

As part of the “cost reduction” webinar series, on October 8 Granta’s Dr Charlie Bream will be talking about the latest data and tools to support material selection and substitution for surgical, orthopaedic, cardiovascular, neurological, and drug delivery devices and packaging.

Medical device designers also need to make sure that materials knowledge is captured and available throughout the design and analysis process to ensure accurate decision-making in subsequent projects. In a webinar on October 14, Granta’s Kristen Roenigk will address the challenges of maximizing value from medical materials information, as well as demonstrating some of the latest data and resources for those involved in surgical and neurological device design.

Latest ASM Medical Materials data; preview of Surgical Materials data module

The Fall developments to the ASM Medical Materials database add new preview information covering surgical devices to the extensive package of orthopaedic, cardiovascular, and neurological device data. The database provides a comprehensive and authoritative set of mechanical, physical, biological response, and drug compatibility properties for the materials and coatings used in FDA approved (510k and PMA) medical devices. New Surgical Materials data will cover: general and plastic surgery devices including clips and staples, laser surgical instruments, suction pumps, sutures, tissue adhesives, wound and burn dressings; therapeutic devices including suction lipoplasty systems; and information relating to prosthetic devices such as surgical meshes and synthetic bone grafting material.

The new release of CES Selector 2015 (see Item 1) includes new links allowing medical device manufacturers with an appropriate subscription to jump straight from materials data in CES Selector to more in-depth information in the online ASM Medical Materials database.

8. Seminars and User Group Meetings

Rolls-Royce to host Northern Europe Meetings (Derby, UK, October 2-3);
Expert Panel includes Rolls-Royce, Jaguar Land Rover, and SKF

Next month, join us for an Open Session at the Northern Europe User Group Meeting, hosted by Rolls-Royce in Derby. The first day is open to anyone with an interest in materials information and its applications in areas including: product development, the supply chain, quality, purchasing, warranty, and meeting environmental and regulatory objectives. This Open Session will provide an opportunity to put questions to our expert panel, to share problems and experiences with colleagues from other engineering enterprises, to hear and discuss industry cases studies, and to see and ask questions about the latest materials information technology.

The second day of the meeting is reserved for current users of the GRANTA MI or CES Selector software.

Both of these events are free of charge, but pre-registration is required and places are limited.
