Granta Material News—September 2009
The quarterly update for anyone who creates, uses, or manages materials information.
| What's New?—GRANTA MI 3.0 |
 |
| |
The new GRANTA MI version 3.0 provides powerful features to help users apply materials data. These include:
GRANTA MI:Restricted Substances—an information system, tools, and data that reduce risks due to REACH and similar regulations and build consideration of such regulations into the design process.
GRANTA MI:Enterprise Materials Optimizer—major enhancements, including new cost models and reporting tools, for this tool that helps companies to make more effective and consistent materials and manufacturing choices.
Embedded equations and logic—supports storage and application of the complex materials models used to describe properties such as fatigue (pictured) or creep. Also enables "on-the-fly" generation of properties based on other values in a database, helping to automate data input and updates.
Advanced querying tools—it's now quicker and easier to specify everything from simple Google-style searches to complex, subtle queries.

In each Granta Material News we link to tips that help users to get more from Granta software.
Advanced querying in GRANTA MI - constructing queries using the updated tools in GRANTA MI 3.0.
Materials models in GRANTA MI - how to add the materials models (or 'math functional data') that describe properties such as fatigue and creep to GRANTA MI; how these models are used in GRANTA MI datasheets.
Use of CES Selector in specific application areas —how do we apply selection criteria specific to areas such as medical devices, plastics, or eco design?

REACH and other restricted substance regulations
The Environmental Materials Information Technology (EMIT) Consortium guides development of software and data to help design in the context of constraints on restricted substances. The first such tools have been released with GRANTA MI 3.0 (see above). More information is available on Granta's website and in a web seminar on September 30. You can also join the EMIT members for an open seminar at their next meeting in Columbus, OH on October 21.

Materials selection for medical devices
When selecting materials for medical devices, as in other industries, we need to ensure a consistent, systematic selection process, so that the right decisions are taken every time. But we must also consider industry-specific properties such as biocompatibility, sterilizability, and regulatory status. And it is particularly important to ensure that the process is fully traceable, so that it can be easily audited. A web seminar on September 17 outlines solutions to these challenges.

Materials information for nuclear and pressure vessel applications
Materials for nuclear applications and pressure vessels must meet requirements for mechanical and thermal properties reliably over many years, often under extreme conditions. Engineers need the right reference information—for example, from the ASME BPV Code. And they need to manage in-house test and QA data to ensure that they retain and re-use materials knowledge, particularly when projects run for decades. Materials data management is also vital to ensure ‘traceability’ for regulatory and maintenance purposes. A web seminar on October 14 will discuss these issues.

Granta to distribute "gRRappler"
Granta is to further develop and distribute gRRappler, a software utility developed by Rolls-Royce engineers to aid the cleansing and processing of materials test data. gRRappler assists the materials experts who administer large databases of materials test data. It is particularly helpful where users need to manipulate large quantities of the complex, functional data that is typical in aerospace engineering.

CERAM extends service offering with Granta software
CERAM, a leading materials technology company will use Granta software to extend its services in materials testing, analysis and consultancy. Granta's CES Selector software will be used to assist with projects that involve analysis of materials choices or manufacturing routes. The GRANTA MI materials information system is also available to CERAM, offering support for projects that require materials test data to be captured, stored, and shared in an easily-accessible but secure format.
