New version now available!

This month sees the launch of Version 6 of GRANTA MI, the materials information management system that creates a single, secure, traceable, source for all of your materials data. GRANTA MI integrates with the tools you need to deploy and use that data effectively in materials teams, design, and beyond. Version 6 makes it easier to find the data that you need. You’ll also find new and improved tools to help you manage and apply that data.

Webinar (Dec 12): Materials data and tools within CAD and CAE

A new Foundation Software and Technology Partnership with Siemens PLM Software has been announced today. The first product from the partnership, GRANTA:MI Materials Gateway for NX is now available, enabling validated materials property data and models to be quickly and consistently accessed and applied from within NX.

3. Materials Information for Automotive

New 'Sheet Steels for Automotive' data

Granta has released a new collection of test data and an associated database structure to support the preparation of simulation models for crash, stamping, and forming. The StahlDat Sheet Steels for Automotive database contains a comprehensive set of test data for 36 popular automotive sheet steel grades, including: elastic, plastic, and cyclic tests; high strain rate data; forming limit diagrams; and bulge tests. The data comes from a collaborative test program run by the German Steel Institute VDEh and a consortium of automotive OEMs and steel producers.

4. Working with Critical Materials

The Dodd-Frank Act and other supply risk factors

'Critical materials' is a term that is becoming more familiar—and for good reason. These are materials such as the rare earth elements used in, for example, advanced alloy systems in aerospace and defense. Their supply chain is liable to political instability, concerns over 'conflict minerals', production monopolies, difficulty of extraction, or environmental concerns. This raises both concerns over supply disruptions and ethical issues for manufacturers using these materials.

Legislators are also responding. One example is the Dodd-Frank Act in the USA. Section 1502 requires manufacturers to publicly disclose whether their procurement of tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold may be helping to fund conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo or surrounding regions.

With GRANTA MI Version 6, a new Critical Materials data module helps you find out about potential problems with conflict minerals. It provides data on supply risks to 67 key elements and their impacts on thousands of engineering materials. This information helps you to perform a data-driven risk assessment for materials supply risks and take early mitigating action to ensure business continuity and reduce long term costs of production.

5. Materials Data Management and Decision Support

Managing corporate materials data

The Materials Data Management Consortium (MDMC), the collaboration of leading engineering enterprises focused on developing best practice tools for managing critical materials data, has now been running for over ten years—it held its twentieth meeting recently at Rolls-Royce in Indianapolis. So the new GRANTA MI Version 6 results from over a decade of practical industry input from MDMC members and other organizations with demanding materials data requirements for their Material & Process teams and Engineering Design. Version 6 reflects this evolving best practice with:

  • New tools for bulk import of test results and other Excel data, making it easier for in-house engineers or collaborators to upload data to your corporate materials information resource.
  • Clearer presentation of data where materials properties vary with test conditions or other parameters—and it's much easier to interrogate this important class of materials data.
  • Enhanced tools to administer the system without the need for advanced IT skills.
  • Improved integration of your in-house tools via the GRANTA MI:API.

Finding and applying materials data

Even if a system can store your materials data, how easy is it to retrieve and use this data? For example, have you ever searched for a metal designation, polymer grade name, or medical device approval code only to find nothing because you had a hyphen or space in the wrong place? Search tools in GRANTA MI Version 6 have added material intelligence—they've been further optimized for these designations. As well as faster, better search results, you get more context information so that it's easier to identify the exact information you need. An enhanced MI:Substitute algorithm also makes it easier to find potential replacement materials. And Version 6 combines a series of recent enhancements to the reference data available with GRANTA MI, including for metals, plastics, and medical applications.

6. Managing Restricted Substances and Surface Treatments

Open Seminar and EMIT Consortium Meeting hosted by Emerson Electric

Last month, representatives from the automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing industries met at the Emerson Advanced Design Center in Columbus, Ohio, to discuss restricted substance regulations and other materials-related environmental challenges. They joined an open session of the Environmental Materials Information Technology (EMIT) Consortium, a collaborative project that develops and applies materials information technology solutions to assist design around environmental constraints. Attendees heard presentations from Consortium members including Emerson Electric and Honeywell. Discussion topics included the impacts of environmental sustainability on design and manufacturing, particularly in light of advances in regulations such as the European Union Energy-related Products (ErP) legislation.

Following from the open seminar, EMIT members (some of whom are pictured, right) continued to discuss how to enable a more effective response to environmental regulations and objectives in product design. They were able to see the results of last year's discussions on the implications of the Dodd-Frank Act, which drove the development of the new Critical Materials data module (see above), along with new tools for working with Surface Treatment Specifications (see below).   EMIT members met at Emerson

7. Understanding Human Biological Materials

Find and compare biocompatibility and engineering properties of natural and synthetic materials

The third edition of the Human Biological Materials data is now available, supporting those who need to find and compare properties of bone materials, as well as the newly added materials such as cartilage, dentin, enamel, ligaments, and tendons. This complements recent updates to the Medical Materials Database, which brings to your desktop a comprehensive and authoritative set of mechanical, physical, biological response, and drug compatibility properties for the materials and coatings used in cardiovascular and orthopaedic medical devices. Accessing these leading reference datasets through GRANTA MI Version 6 makes it easier to find the materials you need, and to apply their properties for medical device design in a traceable manner, supporting legislative compliance.

8. Seminars and User Group Meetings

Granta are getting on the road later this month, with three open seminars addressing materials information challenges in industry. Materials scientists, engineers, and managers in areas related to materials (e.g., product development, the supply chain, quality, purchasing, warranty, and teams focused on environmental objectives) will hear case study presentations from leading engineering enterprises, see demonstrations, get their questions answered, and network with colleagues with similar interests. The seminars will be of relevance to industries including Aerospace, Oil & Gas, Defense, Energy, Industrial & Consumer Equipment, Chemicals, and Materials Production.

The Granta team is also looking forward to joining users of GRANTA MI™ or CES Selector™ at the first Northern Europe User Group Meeting (covering the UK, Ireland, Netherlands, and Scandinavia) on November 21-22. French-speaking users are invited to a similar event being held in Paris on December 4-5. These two-day meetings will provide opportunities for training, sharing experiences with other users, learning about the latest developments and planned enhancements, and providing your feedback and input to the Granta development team.
