Tips

Tip 1: How can I temporarily disable selection stages in CES selector?

When undertaking a selection project in CES Selector 2010, it is easy to switch different stages on and off, showing the effects of individual stages on the final result.

The materials used in this selection project are from a 'custom subset' made up of Thermoplastics. A mass vs cost trade-off plot for a panel in bending, stiffness limited design, has been produced:

An additional limit stage is now added, screening the materials according to their UL 94 flammability rating (selecting V-1 and V-0) only:

In the resulting material selection chart, materials which lie along the trade-off curve have been labeled:

To assess the effects of the flammability limit stage, it is possible to temporarily disable the stage by deselecting the tick-box or right-clicking and deselecting 'enabled':

Deselecting 'enabled' will hide the selection stage

Deselected stages are marked with a cross:

The tick boxes besdie each stage switch the stages on and off

The stage will then be hidden from the selection project: the difference between the two results can clearly be seen by comparing the images, temporarily recovering the original set of materials.

To reinstate the stage in your final selection, simply re-check the tick box beside the stage title, or right-click and choose 'enabled'.

Video Tips

The following video tips are clips extracted from recent Granta web seminars that demonstrate useful features in the GRANTA MI or CES Selector software.

Tip 2: Where can I get coatings data in GRANTA MI?

Length: 3:30 mins.

Presenter: Will Martin, Granta Design

This video excerpt from a recent web seminar on 'Coatings and Restricted Substances' shows where you can find coatings data in GRANTA MI. This first release of the Coatings Data Module focuses on Restricted Substances as well as providing other data, as can be seen in this video. We also plan to develop further data and applications in the future through the Coating Selection Project

Tip 3: How can I identify a ‘drop-in’ alternative for my polymer?

Length: 8 mins

Presenter: Dr Charlie Bream, Granta Design

Do you need to find a material replacement? Are your current materials becoming obsolete? Or are you facing disruption in supply of standard grades, or need to dual source, or looking for locally sourced material? This video excerpt from last month's CES Selector training provides an example for how to handle these situations, showing how to identify a drop-in replacement for a particular grade of polymer.
