Granta Material News—February 2011

The quarterly update for anyone who creates, uses, or manages materials information.

GRANTA MI updated for composite data management
Updates to the GRANTA MI:Composites Package for composite data management will be released in April. A template composite database schema, developed in collaboration with members of the Material Data Management Consortium, makes it straightforward for any company to build a system that manages composite data from testing, QA, research, and design. Integration with the STAT-17 tool for analyzing the elastic properties of composite materials means that a GRANTA MI user can now quickly run a STAT-17 analysis, view results, and automatically record them in the GRANTA MI system. NCAMP project data has been updated. Alongside data from the AGATE and CMH-17 projects, this provides an extensive reference source against which to calibrate in-house results.

Hybrid Synthesizer model writer's guide available
A new guide is available for users of the Hybrid Synthesizer who want to add their own models. The Hybrid Synthesizer is a tool within the CES Selector software that predicts the performance of hybrid materials and structures (such as sandwich panels, foams, lattices and composites). Predicted properties can then be compared with other materials, supporting materials selection and the development of new materials. This new guide explains how to create your own models and add them to the Hybrid Synthesizer.

Coatings and restricted substances Top

New Coatings Data Module and web seminar
Granta and the Rowan Technologies Group have collaborated to create the Coatings Data Module, an information resource on coatings, their properties, and applications. The first release focuses on restricted substances and coatings used in aerospace and defense. Records cover technical, restricted substance, substitution, cost, and other properties for over 100 different coatings (categories include anodize, corrosion inhibitor, heat treat, polymer, weld).

By linking these records to materials and restricted substance data in a GRANTA MI system, users can quickly answer questions such as "What is the impact on my parts and processes of the restrictions on Hexavalent Chromium or REACH candidate list substances?" or "Can I find a substitute coating at low risk from regulation?"

A web seminar on March 10 will demonstrate this new resource and its use in supporting strategic decision-making.

EMIT Open Seminar at Rolls-Royce, Bristol, UK (March 28)
The next meeting of the Environmental Materials Information Technology (EMIT) Consortium will be hosted by Rolls-Royce near Bristol, UK from March 28-30. The project is developing and applying software and information resources to address environmental impact and regulations in product design. On the first day of the meeting, an Open Seminar provides an opportunity for anyone interested in these issues to hear presentations from and network with EMIT members, as well as seeing the latest technology. EMIT members include EADS Astrium, Eurocopter, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, and NPL.

New tools for materials & process cost analysis Top

Join a new collaborative project
A new Special Interest Group, open to any materials producer or manufacturing organization, will focus on tools for materials and process cost analysis. Key applications are: helping materials producers with market analysis and assessing competitiveness, and helping manufacturers to develop a strategic approach to material and process choices. The project will be interesting to Advanced Innovation, Research & Development, or Technical Marketing groups looking for tools to help make strategic materials decisions and thus gain competitive advantage.

The first phase of this project will look at combining material and process considerations to model the potential cost of manufactured parts under different scenarios, and the visualization of the cost and competitive implications of different material and process selections.

Environmental sustainability in product design Top

Pre-order your copy of a new design guide
With product eco-labelling schemes such as the Carbon Trust's PAS 2050 standard gaining momentum, an ever-expanding list of products captured by the European Union's 'Energy-related Products' (ErP) Directive, and increasingly intense scrutiny from environmental organizations, many companies are now beginning to understand the importance of improving the environmental performance of their products. But for many, this is a new and daunting challenge. To help you get started, Granta is developing a short Guide to Eco Design, to be released in March. The Guide will outline some simple actions that designers and design managers can take to deliver more environmentally-sustainable products.

Join our web seminar on "integrating environmental sustainability considerations into design"

There will be another opportunity for you to learn more about Eco Design at our web seminar on March 24, where we will discuss:

  • The commercial opportunities and regulatory pressures that are driving companies to improve the environmental performance of their products
  • The importance of considering environmental performance during the early stages of design
  • How Granta's Eco Audit tool can be used to quickly identify environmental 'hotspots' and guide you to more environmentally sustainable materials choices.

Cardiovascular Materials and Orthopaedic Materials data updated—web seminar
The Cardiovascular Materials and Orthopaedic Materials Data Modules were updated in January. These modules now provide data on over 5,400 cardiovascular devices and 7,900 orthopaedic devices, and the associated materials, coatings, and drugs. The data is available within GRANTA MI or via the online Materials for Medical Devices Database. The database is being demonstrated at a joint web seminar with ASM International on March 10.
