Consortium welcomes TRW Automotive, views latest developments

Materials Strategy Consortium logoMembers of the Materials Strategy Consortium and other manufacturing organizations met in Detroit earlier this month to review the latest developments in software for systematic materials selection, substitution, and cost optimization. Appropriately, given the location in Motor City, TRW Automotive was welcomed as the latest member of the Consortium, and was joined in an open workshop by other automotive suppliers, OEMs and consultants. Manufacturers of consumer products, and industrial equipment and components were also represented.

Attendees heard various organizations describe their use, or planned use, of selection software, ranging from helping designers to make individual materials choices to developing a company-standard approach to selection in the context of six-sigma. Granta provided previews of the latest Consortium-driven technology projects, including tools to support: materials and process cost modeling, materials equivalence and substitution, synthesis of hybrid/composite materials, and selection of coatings.

EMIT Consortium is grounded, but still makes progress!

EMIT Consortium logoTravel problems due to volcanic ash over northern Europe meant that the Environmental Materials Information Technology (EMIT) Consortium was unable to meet at EADS Astrium in Toulouse last week. Undeterred, members held eight hours of web meetings over two days, with a major focus on tools to aid design in the context of restricted substance regulations. Members reviewed new software and information resources to be delivered with this summer's release of the GRANTA MI software, and fleshed-out details of software planned for future releases.

New capabilities that are coming soon include:

  • Material substitution tools—a systematic method for replacing obsolete or 'at risk' materials, identifying substitutes based on physical properties and restricted substance content

  • Alerts to notify users of changes in key regulations of interest—for example, the addition of substances to the REACH Candidate List. Together with integrated information on where substances are typically used, these will ease the process of risk assessment

During discussions of future releases, two features prioritized for development were: the ability to determine the parts in which substances are contained throughout an enterprise, and the creation of improved methods for collecting supplier declaration information—enabling capture of material and part declarations in an efficient, error-free, and automated manner. The next meeting will be at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL in October—hopefully uninterrupted by nature!

Granta to co-chair restricted substances session at E2S2 (Denver, Jun 14-17)

Granta is co-chairing and speaking in two half-day sessions on "Restricted Substances Information Management" at the Environment, Energy, and Sustainability Symposium (E2S2) and Exhibition in Denver in June. Session chairs are Granta's Dr David Cebon and Shannon Cunniff, Director, Chemical and Material Risk Management in the Office of the US Deputy Under Secretary of Defense. Speakers include representatives of NASA, Honeywell, the US Department of Defense, the Army Research Labs, Tetratech, and Raytheon. The event should offer a great opportunity to catch up on the latest thinking and exchange ideas in this important emerging area.

Preview new MI:Materials Gateway technology at SIMULIA, PTC events

Granta will soon be launching its new GRANTA MI:Materials Gateway technology (look out for more information in the next Granta Material News). MI:Gateway provides seamless access from third-party software, such as CAD or CAE, to materials data managed in GRANTA MI. From your CAD software, for example, this enables you to open a window accessing your corporate materials database, specify your requirements, assign the resulting materials to your CAD model, and run reports that draw on data from both systems. You will be able to see these powerful new capabilities at two upcoming engineering software vendors’ user events.

Cardiovascular and Orthopaedic data modules

The latest versions of the Cardiovascular and Orthopaedic data modules are now available. In the first major quarterly update of 2010, the scope of the Orthopaedic module has been increased to include Cranioplasty and Ossicular devices. All device categories have been updated to include the latest FDA device approvals, with comprehensive engineering property and biomedical response data for materials, coatings and drugs used.

The data modules can be added, alongside your own corporate materials data, to an installation of the GRANTA MI software on your network. This provides medical device companies with a single source for all of their materials information.

Alternatively, you can subscribe to access these data modules over the Internet through the Materials for Medical Devices Database. The software underlying this online version has been upgraded to the latest GRANTA MI version, 3.1. This means that online users enjoy improved functionality in browsing, querying, and viewing the data.

Boeing to speak at Seattle seminar (May 18 – alongside SAMPE 2010)

The latest seminar in our "Managing and Using Materials Information" series will run in Seattle, WA next month, on May 18. The seminar is a great opportunity to see the latest technology, hear case study presentations, and discuss your materials information challenges with your peers and with Granta experts. A guest speaker will discuss materials information management issues at Boeing, and how they are addressed.

The event will be held alongside the SAMPE 2010 conference, but is separate from that event and open to all.

Video tips Top

You can view three short video clips, each extracted from a recent Granta web seminar, that demonstrate specific capabilities of Granta software.

Analysis of composite data —shows how use of a statistical analysis tool in Excel (STAT-17) is integrated with the GRANTA MI software. Composite test data from a GRANTA MI database is seamlessly transferred into STAT-17, analyzed, and the results are stored in the database.

Estimating eco impact - illustrates the use of Granta’s Eco Audit Tool to produce an estimate of the energy and CO2 generated during the lifecycle of a product (in this case, a coffee maker).

Cost modeling - demonstrating some of the new advanced features of the GRANTA MI:Enterprise Materials Optimizer that include materials and process costs in making materials choices.
