4.Reminder: Ashby Materials Design Award 2006 - closing date 31 May

This year’s competition, set by Professor Mike Ashby, requires students to imagine that they are materials consultants asked to help with a realistic materials selection problem.

The challenge is "to find out if there are any materials that have a very low thermal conductivity and, at the same time, are pretty strong (able to withstand 15,000 psi of pressure). The application involves hot liquid flowing through a tube – the idea is to minimize the amount of heat lost. It is a medical application."

The broad description of the problem leaves many unanswered questions and a variety of avenues to explore, making the competition ideal for inclusion in class work or design projects. Universities with enrolment licenses can encourage students to work on the problem using their own PCs at home.

The winning student will receive a personal copy of CES EduPack 2006 and an Amazon gift certificate for US$150, €150, or £100.
