New paper from Professor Mike Ashby - 'Teaching Engineering Materials'
A new paper from Mike Ashby and David Cebon describes a design-led approach to the teaching of materials and processes, supported by computer-based methods, teaching resources, and data such as those provided by the CES EduPack software and supporting materials. The paper updates previous Granta publications outlining this widely-used and well-respected approach. It references newly available software features including upgraded materials selection capabilities, complete 'science notes' that explain the fundamental science underlying materials properties, and a new Elements database.

Listen now! Recorded presentation - Mike Ashby introduces CES EduPack
Professor Mike Ashby recently presented a web seminar introducing the new CES EduPack 2007 - its features and how it is applied in engineering education. An audio-visual recording of this presentation is now available at the Granta website - you can hear Mike Ashby present and see his presentation slides.
Listen now! The video is available as part of Granta's Materials and Process Education Info Pack |

Short course - Nürnberg, Germany, September 9
One short course remains in our 2007 program covering the teaching of materials and manufacturing.
Date |
Location |
Details |
9 Sep |
Nürnberg, Germany |
At the EuroMat conference
Course leader: Professor Mike Ashby |
The short course will be held within the EuroMat program, although conference registration is not required for course attendance. Places on the course are limited, so early registration is recommended!
Designed for professors, lecturers, and teachers, the course provides an overview of a design-led approach for teaching materials and manufacturing to engineering and design students. It introduces the CES EduPack software and teaching resources, which are central to this approach, but which may be applied to support and enhance any materials or manufacturing course. Through lectures interspersed with hands-on tutorial sessions using the software, the course will train you in the use of the CES EduPack.

Next live web seminar - 'Introduction to CES EduPack 2007', June 19
Granta's next live web seminar will be held on Tuesday, June 19, providing a brief overview of the CES EduPack 2007 system. This is a great opportunity to find out how the EduPack is applied to improve the teaching and learning experience in engineering, science, processing, and design. You will also be able to see what is new in the latest 2007 release and to get your questions answered by the presenter.

Reviews and reports from materials educators
How are computer-based teaching tools, such as CES EduPack, influencing the teaching of materials and processes? The user reviews and reports on Granta's website provide a snapshot of how such tools are helping educators around the world. Recent updates include comments from the University of Bristol and the Architecture faculty at the Technical University of Delft - both have recently expanded their use of CES EduPack via a campus licence and reported on the experience in their institutions' online newsletters. You can read these and browse other users' comments using the links below.

Trendspotting - EduPack goes earlier and broader
The reports from Bristol and Delft (see item 5, above) are examples of an increasing trend. CES EduPack, which five years ago was used mainly as specialist materials selection software for third and fourth year engineering courses, is now being used earlier in the curriculum - for example, in Introduction to Materials courses - and in a wider range of subjects - for example, Architecture, Aerospace Engineering, and Industrial Design. This development reflects both new features (a new textbook, new databases, more information on the background science) and the attitude of materials educators. More university and college teachers see the EduPack as an essential teaching resource and are innovating in its use.
Broader use across a department or faculty helps to develop consistency and create valuable links across its curriculum. One easy way to trial such broader use is to switch to a campus license. This allows any edition of CES EduPack to be distributed to any student on any course in the departments covered and, shared across multiple courses, can reduce the cost-per-user.

Manage your materials data for research
Did you know that Granta can help you with more than your teaching? CES Constructor and selection capabilities within the EduPack software allow you to analyze and present your own materials data.
Alternatively, you may want to consider GRANTA MI - our comprehensive materials data management system. GRANTA MI could help you if you face any of the following issues:
- You have to capture, process, and analyze large quantities of materials data in your research
- You want to retain this data, including its full pedigree, in order to preserve your work or to enable future analyses
- It would be useful to share such information with colleagues and collaborators in a controlled manner - perhaps allowing some collaborators to edit and update data, while others can simply access the data for use in analysis or design.

Report from TMS. See us at MS&T in Detroit!
Thank you to all those who joined our recent short course at the TMS meeting in Orlando. Professor Mike Ashby and his Granta colleagues were delighted to spend the day teaching an enthusiastic group of materials and process educators how to get more from their use of CES EduPack. You'll be able to see us in the Fall at September's MS&T conference in Detroit. And our short course schedule for the 2007-8 academic year is likely to include a return to the ASEE conference when it lands back in the mainland US next year. If you would like to attend, or even host, a future Granta short course - contact us!

DGM course - 'Systematische Werkstoffauswahl', July 4-5
The DGM (German Materials Society) is running a two-day course on systematic materials selection in Karlsruhe on July 4-5. Granta is a supporting sponsor.

8th International Conference on Eco-Materials, July 9-11
Eco-Materials are increasingly important as awareness and regulation of the environmental impact of materials grows. The 8th International Conference on Eco-Materials (ICEM8) will be hosted by Brunel University, UK, in July. The selection of materials according to their eco-properties is an important focus area for Granta and we are pleased to support ICEM8. Granta's Professor Mike Ashby will deliver a keynote lecture at the event.
