Available for two weeks:  newly updated white papers on Eco Design

Professor Mike Ashby has just published newly updated versions of two white papers focusing on the teaching of sustainability and eco design with CES EduPack.

'CES EduPack for Eco Design—A White Paper' provides an overview of how CES EduPack can guide students as they learn about the principles of environmentally-aware design. The white paper not only describes the methodology but also the underlying eco data incorporated within the software. Case studies and new graphics generated using CES EduPack give real examples: the software allows you to incorporate similar images into your teaching.

'The CES EduPack Eco Audit Tool—A White Paper' looks in more detail at one aspect of these teaching resources. The Eco Audit Tool supports students as they explore 'what-if scenarios', giving them a rapid assessment of the results of their material and processing choices across the entire lifecycle of a product.

These white papers are just some of the resources, continually being updated, that form Granta's Teaching Resource website. Many are available as open access resources; others can be downloaded by the CES EduPack community to support their teaching.

2: 2012 Materials Education Symposia Program Top

Symposia Advisory Committee announces speakers and program for Spring 2012 events

The Advisory Committee today announced the speakers for two key events for materials educators being held next Spring at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, CA, and the University of Cambridge, UK.  The program is now available on the events' website, describing two days of talks and extended poster sessions in which presenters will outline successful approaches to materials-related teaching across a broad range of engineering, design, and science disciplines. Discussion sessions, networking, and a social program all provide interactivity, with plenty of opportunities to meet people and exchange ideas. Early-bird registration runs until December 16.

The Symposia are being coordinated by Granta Design with the support of ASM International, ASEE Materials Division, California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), University of Cambridge, SEFI, FEMS, and TMS.

There is still time to submit a poster—the deadline is February 15. As well as the poster displays, poster presenters will be invited to offer a brief introduction to their work as part of the main lecture program. At both Symposia, poster presenters will be invited to join speakers and session chairs at the pre-Symposium presenters' dinner.

The Symposia are being coordinated by Granta Design with support from ASM International, the ASEE Materials Division, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, University of Cambridge, SEFI, FEMS, and TMS.

3: Short courses with Prof. Mike Ashby (Spring 2012) Top

Short courses put CES EduPack into practice, supporting your existing materials teaching

Prof. Mike Ashby will be leading two short courses alongside the Materials Education Symposia in March and April. These will introduce and demonstrate the use of CES EduPack, with a particular focus on "Materials and the Environment". Professors, Lecturers, and Program Directors of university and college courses related to materials and manufacturing are all welcome to take part, working through a series of units each including a short lecture, a software demonstration, discussion time, and a "hands-on session" during which attendees can use the latest CES EduPack software.

Granta's annual update to CES EduPack will be available early in 2012; join a course to try out the new software features, information, and teaching resources which it will offer.
