CES EduPack—Installation Guidelines

Prerequisites

The installation of CES EduPack requires the following prerequisite software:

  • Net Framework Version 4.5.1
  • Microsoft Report Viewer 2010 SP1
  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio

The French language installation requires the French language packs of these.

Any missing packages will be automatically installed when you run edupack_setup.XXXX.exe. This can take some time and may require you to restart your machine.

Installer Technology

The CES EduPack installer is created using Microsoft Installer technology. The different components of CES EduPack are each installed separately using their respective MSI files (e.g. EduPack.msi, l1en.msi, l1elem.msi, etc.), which are entirely written in Windows Installer.

The edupack_setup.XXXX.exe bootstrapper, which is also written in Windows Installer, will install the relevant MSIs sequentially after installing the relevant prerequisites.

Standard installation

This is the standard installation method.

To install CES EduPack via a download:

  1. Go to Granta’s Education Hub and sign in to your My Granta account.
  2. Click Download software, and click the download link to save the installer.
  3. Run the installer by double-clicking edupack_setup.XXXX.exe. Enter your My Granta account information when prompted.
  4. To install the software, click Install now, and follow the on-screen instructions.

To install CES EduPack from the DVD or using a custom installer created for distribution:

  1. Copy the files onto your computer. Make sure licence.xml is in the same folder as the installer, edupack_setup.XXXX.exe.
  2. Run the installer and follow the on-screen instructions.

Quiet (silent) installation options

You can run edupack_setup.XXXX.exe in quiet mode to install CES EduPack. This mode requires no user input and will run entirely in the background.

To perform a quiet installation of CES EduPack, you will need to use the installer provided on the DVD, or use the installer created as part of an installation package.

You will need licence.xml in the same folder as the installer. You do not need to enter your My Granta account information:

.\edupack_setup.XXXX.exe /quiet

To uninstall quietly, use the following command:

.\edupack_setup.XXXX.exe /quiet /uninstall

Installation using MSI files

Installing the MSI files individually

Typically, you will install CES EduPack using the edupack_setup.20xx.exe bootstrapper. However, it is possible to install the MSI files individually by running them directly. This enables you to install one edition of CES EduPack if you have, for example, a license for All Editions. The minimum you would need to install is EduPack.msi and at least one database MSI. You will need to install EduPack.msi before installing any databases.

  1. Use the standard installer to create an installation package. This will download your licensed MSI files, and your license key file licence.xml. This enables you to install one edition of CES EduPack if you have, for example, a license for All Editions. If you were sent a DVD instead, then you can access these files from the DVD without creating an installation package.
  2. Run the Windows Command Prompt as Administrator.
  3. Install EduPack.msi by entering the following command, including your license key:
    msiexec /i “C:\PATH\EduPack.msi” /quiet PIDKEY=licensekey
The license key is available from licence.xml.Open the file in Notepad, and copy the key from the <License><Key> element. Enter your license key without any spaces or dashes.
  4. Install databases using a similar command, and include the MSI name. You do not need to enter the license key when installing databases:
    msiexec /i “C:\PATH\DATABASE.msi” /quiet

The /quiet flag will install the MSI files in quiet mode.

Uninstalling the MSI files individually

To uninstall CES EduPack, you will need to uninstall the databases first, before uninstalling EduPack.msi. Enter the following command, and change the MSI name as required:

msiexec /x “C:\PATH\EduPack.msi” /quiet

Installing one edition of CES EduPack when you have All Editions

For quiet installation on many computers: Follow the instructions for Installing the MSI files individually to install one edition of CES EduPack when you have purchased All Editions. This is typically done to simplify the options available to students.

To create an installation package for students:

  1. Run the installer and click Create installation package.
  2. In the installation package folder created, delete the MSI files that you don’t need from the folder Packages.
  3. Open licence.xml in Notepad and delete the lines of code that refer to the MSI files you don't need, e.g., <MsiPackage Name=”XXXXDatabase” />. Save the file.

The modified installation package can now be distributed to students. They will only be able to install the edition or editions you have made available. They can install CES EduPack by double-clicking edupack_setup.XXXX.exe.

These are the MSI files required for each edition:

Create installation package

You can use the CES EduPack installer to create a custom offline installation package. You can use this package to perform a quiet installation of CES EduPack, or to distribute a specific CES EduPack edition to students:

  1. Go to Granta’s Education Hub and sign in to your My Granta account.
  2. Click Download software, and click the download link to save the installer.
  3. Run the installer by double-clicking edupack_setup.XXXX.exe. Enter your My Granta account information when prompted.
  4. Click Create installation package.
  5. Select the edition you want to distribute.
  6. Click Continue. This will create an installer in a folder that you can then distribute to other licensed users. They can run this custom installer without signing in to My Granta.

Network installation

You can install CES EduPack from a network file share by running edupack_setup.XXXX.exe from each client machine. If you are an experienced Administrator, you might prefer to deploy CES EduPack through Active Directory using Group Policy. We recommend you only do this if you are already familiar with Active Directory.
