About Granta Design

Granta Design is a spin-out of the Cambridge University Engineering Department. We were founded by Professors Mike Ashby and David Cebon in 1994, based on the first computer-aided teaching project in the Department. The original Granta software was based around materials selection tools and data, using a methodology pioneered by Mike Ashby (see his well-known book Materials Selection in Mechanical Design). In the last 20 years we have evolved from these beginnings and developed CES EduPack: a much broader set of teaching resources supporting the full range of approaches and topics in teaching materials to students of Engineering, Science, and Design. Granta remains an independent company, co-owned by the founders, employees, the University of Cambridge and, since 2000, ASM International, the world's largest professional society for materials engineers.
