Granta's Workshop

Learning Outcomes for Sustainable Development Teaching in Engineering Degrees

In this workshop, we present an approach to address point 4.1: the External, societal and environmental context of the CDIO Syllabus 2.0. This suggested approach is based on a 5-step, project methodology to assess sustainability of technologies. It is aided by the Sustainability database of CES EduPack [1], a computer based tool that can be useful for several different learning outcomes. This methodology has been initially tested with students at the University of Cambridge, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in USA. It has also been presented during 2013 at Engineering Education for Sustainable Development and Euromat. It has received positive feedback, as a methodology that helps students tackle both objective fact-finding on societal topics and the subjective weighing of stakeholder opinions and values. The objective of this hands-on workshop is to demonstrate one way to support the teaching of sustainable development in engineering. A scenario will be outlined and participants will be encouraged to engage with it and carry out part of the 5-step methodology. Information will be distributed on the day, so no preparation is needed.
