Granta can help you to:
- Ensure the validity and quality of critical materials property data used in your product design and analysis
- Deploy corporate materials knowledge and reference data throughout your CAD and FEA/CAE communities, in a controlled and secure manner
- Enable designers and analysts to get materials property data directly within their engineering application, without interrupting their workflow
At Granta, we are the materials information technology experts. We were founded in 1994 from Cambridge University and the work of materials engineering authority Professor Mike Ashby. We developed by working closely with top engineering organizations and partners such as ASM International (the leading materials engineering society and a Granta shareholder). We deliver materials software, data, and databases that help our customers to improve quality, innovation, and efficiency, while reducing risk and cost.
Granta technology helps organizations like Boeing, Dow, EADS Astrium, Emerson Electric, GE, Honeywell, NASA, Renault F1, and Rolls-Royce to:
- Get all of their corporate materials data under control in one place and provide secure enterprise-wide access
- Manage this information resource - capture new data from testing, quality assurance and other sources, analyze it to create design ‘allowables’, and maintain all of the stored information and relationships
- Deploy materials information for use in business-critical systems, including computer-aided design and engineering software
- Use materials information to make decisions in areas including optimal materials selection, materials substitution, and eco-design
Support for CAD and FEA/CAE
Materials property data is one of the fundamental inputs to simulation software - particularly to finite element analysis programs. But getting the right data can be frustrating and time-consuming. You spend too long trying to find it. You find that it is incompete, out-of-date, or inconsistent with colleagues’ versions. You can’t trace the data to its source. Granta eliminates these frustrations with the following solutions.

Materials reference data
Granta’s comprehensive library of data on materials properties and processes includes:
- Aerospace & Energy Data Series - including MMPDS (formerly Mil-Handbook-5) aero alloys, Mil-Handbook-17 composites, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel data
- Plastics Data Series - including the CAMPUS plastics data
- Medical Data Series - including the Materials for Medical Devices Database
- Universe Data Series - comprehensive coverage of technical, environmental, and relative data for engineering materials; supports systematic selection

Management of corporate materials data
Our GRANTA MI system allows engineering enterprises to capture all of their materials data in a controlled, secure materials information resource. Integrated tools allow materials experts to analyze this data and publish approved information for use in design. An intuitive web browser interface makes it easy for the design and simulation communities to access this data, assured that it is up-to-date, accurate, and approved for use. Materials data can be exported in the right formats for software like Abaqus, ANSYS, Nastran, Patran, and Pro/ENGINEER. Data export can be adapted easily to formats required by in-house tools.
Plug-ins to CAE and other software
Granta can make it even easier for users of engineering software to get materials reference data or approved corporate materials information. Our Application Programming Interface (API) enables the creation of ‘plug-ins’ (such as the Abaqus CAE plug-in, pictured above) that provide access to GRANTA MI databases from within CAD systems, FEA pre-processors, or other software. You browse in-house or reference materials databases, add to and pick from a Favorites list, choose the applicable materials model and units system, and apply the data directly to your model, all without leaving your CAD or CAE environment.
