We are the materials information technology experts. At Granta
Design, we work closely with our customers and partners to specify, develop, and
deliver software, materials data, and materials database solutions that help you improve quality, innovation, and efficiency, while reducing risk and cost.
Our
technology and expertise originate in Cambridge University and are
reinforced through extensive industry partnerships. We help enterprises
manage, analyze, and apply critical data in the engineering process. We also provide the world's leading teaching resource for materials and process education. |

People & history
Granta was founded in 1994, from a materials engineering software collaboration between Professors Mike Ashby and David Cebon at Cambridge University.
The company has grown steadily to become the largest organization in the world dedicated solely to the niche area of materials information technology. We have invested in developing new materials information solutions with support from our customers, ASM International (the world’s largest professional society for materials engineering), and three industry consortia. The oldest of these, the Material Data Management Consortium (MDMC), is a collaboration of top aerospace, defense, and energy organizations that drove development of GRANTA MI, now the industry-standard system for managing materials information in engineering enterprises. |

Ownership & partners
Granta is an independent, private company owned by its founders, employees, the University of Cambridge, and ASM International. Our three collabortative consortia are: the Material Data Management Consortium; the Materials Strategy Consortium, focused on software for systematic materials selection, substitution, and cost optimization; and the Environmental Materials Information Technology (EMIT) Consortium for eco-design and eco-regulations.
Our solutions are augmented by data partnerships with specialists in metals and alloys (MMPDS, MI-21, ESDU MMDH), composites (CMH-17), and polymers (CAMPUS, RAPRA, IDES, MoldFlow), and by technology partnerships with leaders in computer-aided engineering (e.g., SIMULIA, ANSYS, PTC, Siemens PLM). |
