History, ownership, technology
Find out more about Cambridge University, ASM International, and their involvement with Granta.
Granta was founded in 1994 from a materials engineering software collaboration between Professors Mike Ashby and David Cebon at the Cambridge University Engineering Department. Granta remains an independent, private company owned by its founders, employees, the University of Cambridge, and ASM International—the world's largest professional society for materials engineers.
Technology firsts include: Ashby charts; materials performance indices; methods for systematic materials selection; eco-design tools; enterprise materials information management system.
Building on these strong foundations in materials science and engineering, Granta has grown steadily to become the largest organization in the world dedicated solely to the niche area of materials information technology.
Through close collaboration with industrial customers and with technology and academic leaders, we have developed a portfolio of products that includes:
- GRANTA MI—the leading system for materials information management in engineering enterprises.
- CES Selector—unique materials decisions support tools.
- Granta data products—a comprehensive library of materials information.
- CES EduPack—world-leading teaching resources for materials education.
Granta's board and management team combines expertise in materials property data, software development, and technology business management.
In building the Granta team, we remain committed to technical excellence and to a positive and customer-focused attitude that delivers the solutions and support that our partners and customers need. The result is a high-caliber team of engineers and scientists, all of whom are qualified at bachelors, masters, or PhD degree level. Our staff offers extensive expertise in areas including:
- Materials information consultancy
- Materials science and engineering
- Mechanical engineering
- Software engineering
- Multimedia and web development

Partners & collaborations
Close collaboration with industry and other leading technology providers is central to Granta's approach. As well as working collaboratively with every customer, Granta coordinates two industry consortia. These projects bring together leading engineering companies to network, develop best practice in a specific area, and advise Granta on its development plans.
Granta also works with leading providers of engineering software, such as ANSYS, Autodesk, Dassault Systèmes, PTC, and Siemens PLM to ensure that materials data and tools can be deployed for use in Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE), and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. And Granta solutions are augmented by data partnerships with specialists in metals and alloys (MMPDS, MI-21, Stahlinstitut VDEh, ESDU MMDH), composites (CMH-17, Firehole Composites), and polymers (CAMPUS, RAPRA, IDES, MoldFlow).
Finally, Granta is an active participant in industry and government-sponsored scientific and engineering collaborations: for example, via the European Union's Framework programs.
Some example Granta customers are:
Aubert & Duval, Baker Hughes, Boeing, Bombardier, Covidien, EADS Astrium, Emerson Electric, Eurocopter, GE—Aviation, GE—Energy, Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Moen, NASA, Northrop Grumman, Novo Nordisk, NPL, Philips, Raytheon, Rhodia, Rolls-Royce, TRW Automotive.
Granta also has customers at over 800 universities and colleges worldwide.
Where are we?
Everywhere! Headquartered in Cambridge, UK, we support customers worldwide. Granta has local offices in Mason, OH, USA and Munich, Germany. And we work with local representatives to provide additional support for customers in Germany, Japan, and Korea.
